It's great stuff, and the first appearance of Concrete - but a really cheesy 'only in the 80s' cover:

Lots of great stuff in Mister X - but looking back it's a kind of an 80s mish-mash of New Wave imagery and "Blade Runner" futurism that never really made much sense:

One of the reasons I think Watchmen is so interesting is because of how aware they were of the 80s esthetics, colours and trends - it seems to exploit the 80s to comment on the 80s more then it just seems like a product of the 80s... Of course maybe I'm wrong and I only took that from it because I read it in the late 90s looking back.

              X-Factor spinoff...

I deliriously happy that Artie and Leech are part of the current FF, and that they will be spinning the series off as an ongoing for the Future Foundation kids once the Fantastic Four resumes their own title.

                  Gaiman and Mckean's early collaboration.

Seth's Mr X run certainly was experimental, but for me Motter and Seth were never able to surpass the Hernandez Brothers run.

Chris Warner's work on The American was much more satisfying than Black Cross (and his Predator run which followed). I don't know why this series does not have as much acclaim as Watchmen and Dark Knight... it really was a visionary take on the current era of heightened media manipulation that we exist in now.

This is going to sound like a dis to him, but it's not - for me Miller never left the 80s, and he probably shouldn't try. Like, even when I see his new stuff it seems like it's from the 80s to me. He's like Mr. 80s to me in a lot of ways - it's one of the things that makes him interesting to me.

I like Seth a lot, I think he's a great designer and artist - but I still haven't really been blown away by his comic work. I think the Hernandez Bros. just seem like naturals - they can tell a story even if it's about nothing and make it work. It seems effortless - To me, anyway.

I was never into Black Cross - but I did like Dark Horse Presents - especially for Concrete and later Bacchus.

I'll track down The American - sounds cool!

now that you mention it i agree. Miller is still in the 80's and Byrne is still somewhere in the late 60's, early 70's.

I'm still waiting for the completion of the original Faust series. There hasn't been an issue in years.

He had a prolific period about ten years ago with Avatar where he did about a dozen or two Faust tie ins within a fairly short span.

Recently he's done some commercial work... illustrating Frank Frazetta comics for Image.

samurainoir - I'll never understand how you can know all this stuff and not be a comic scholar full-time. Always amazes me.
