Well, technically, it was the Ultimate Universe Peter Parker that died and was replaced by the new Spidey. The regular Marvel Universe Peter Parker is healthy as a horse and still wears the webs.

I really liked the Ultimate version of Peter, too, but I kind of like where this new one's going.
"It's sad that governments are chiefed by the double tongues. There is iron in your words of death for all Comanche to see, and so there is iron in your words of life. No signed paper can hold the iron. It must come from men. The words of Ten Bears carries the same iron of life and death. It is good that warriors such as we meet in the struggle of life... or death. It shall be life."

Haven't read it but if they want to go in a completely new direction without any of the old baggage this seems like the way to do it. If they just started over again with Peter, they'd end up repeating some of the basic stories and there would be expectations to bring in the same old villains and such.

Brand new character, no expectations. To me this could result in something truly new and creative. And there is nothing wrong with that.

Anyone who wants Peter Parker can just read Amazing Spider-man.

They never learn they have done this same stunt with Iron Man, Green Lantern and neither was a big hit for long and after the first two issues sales dropped
Now to be fair yes James Rhodes became popular as War Machine but that was a good five plus years after they tried makeing him Iron Man and instead made him his own hero
John Steward became more popular when he worked along side Hal instead of replacing him

Spider-man is my personal favorite but I gave up years ago. I think my breaking point was the story line of the Green Goblin raping Gwen Stacey before she died and having twins who had Green Goblin like powers and were wanted revenge on Spider-Man.

This was the first time I gave up. The second time followed the brand new dat storyline that erased Peter and MJs marriage.

Wow. Missed that storyline, thank goodness. What year was this? I'm assuming 90's?
              It's all good!

I believe it was either late nineties or early 00s. The only saving grace to the whole debacle was Mike Deodata's artwork...
sigpic Oh then, what's this? Big flashy lighty thing, that's what brought me here! Big flashy lighty things have got me written all over them. Not actually. But give me time. And a crayon.

Then why call it Spider-Man if they want a totally different character?

And as for the Gwen Stacy-Green Goblin (Norman Osborn) thing; it wasn't rape. It was consensual, making the whole storyline all the more gross and wrong.
