I've been hoping Dark Horse would do a new adaption of the first novel for a centennial celebration sort of thing, but I'm not even sure if they have the license any longer, it's been so long since they've done anything fresh with it (I think they might still be reprinting Jesse Marsh's Dell stuff). Also, you'd kind of think someone would have seen this coming and been working on a film, since Hollywood seems to think everything old is new again.

With all the John Carter Mars stuff that has come out of the woodwork lately, I'm sure this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Although this is exactly what should happen to work as it falls into public domain... Preserved and also reinvented so that it does continue as a historical artifact and living culture.

What's odd to me is that most people will see the Disney live-action film and think it's a rip-off of Avatar, when it's the exact opposite, if anything. It amazes me how the character that launched a genre (although to be fair Gullivar Jones was first) remains unknown to so many.

I just hope they try to get Tarzan right. It could bring me back to buying comics, which would be an accomplishment.

that cover and price tag has already got my interest, i wonder how it looks on the inside. fantastic character, i wonder what type of figures (if any) are available for him these days. Tarzan: the legend of greystoke and the classic b/w movies are some of my favorite films.

I think back when Ink & Paint were releasing all those 70s and 80s kids DVDs like Flash Gordon, Blackstar, and Ark II there was some difficulty with the license. I wrote Andy Mangels (I think he was the top dog at Ink & Paint, IIRC) about trying to push to release it a couple times, but never heard anything back. Last I heard, Warner Brothers had the rights for the cartoon. It might be one of those deals like Batman '66 where there are two companies involved and no one wants to budge, so no one makes money and the fans go without.

I have a crappy bootleg set I got off eBay, and would gladly buy an official, cleaned-up release if one were available.

The Dynamite John Carter series is very good, and mostly faithful to the book. Sorry I can't say the same for last week's Marvel-Disney version. If that's what is coming in the film ext spring, it's a bomb, I tells ya!

I would guess Lord of the Jungle is usable. This would be a cool figure done with real hair like Conan.
It's not a doll it's an action figure.

Philip Jose Farmer of course has been going the generic non licensed route for years prior.

Although he only recently got to write an official Tarzan book.

This interview might shed some light on the subject:

Love the Tarzan and John Carter stories by Burroughs. He's long been one of my favourite writers.

                            Interesting interview.
I'd love to see the Filmation Tarzan get a release some day. I used to watch that religiously.

I saw that and went ahead and ordered it. Even a subpar edition is better than nothing at all. One of my favorite cartoons as a kid. I also thought it was one of the better Filmation products made back then. It's amazing the copyright holders are fighting over a series that would likely sale only moderately well in today's market. I doubt there are many kids that would pick this up. Only those who were lucky to follow it back then can appreciate it's full value.
