Here's one for the NOVA fans...

Saw this over on Cosmic Book News....

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fz1TV...layer_embedded

Now THAT is a seriously wicked good NOVA uniform. I would love to meet the guy who created it. I mean, yeah, we can't see it up close very well, but from the video, it looks just like Richard Rider stepped out of a comics panel and onto the stage!!!
sigpic Oh then, what's this? Big flashy lighty thing, that's what brought me here! Big flashy lighty things have got me written all over them. Not actually. But give me time. And a crayon.

        That's the Annihilation outfit right?

I was really skeptical when my brother gave this series to me to read, but I enjoyed it quite a bit. Richard Ryder really got to shine in it. I never really cared much for the character previously, even in New Warriors.

Annihilation would make a great epic movie... particularly with Nova at the centre of it as the main protagonist.

Seeing Annihilus' hoard sweeping across the universe and decimating entire empires like the Kree, Skrulls and Shi'ar, done with modern special effects would be mindblowing.

Love the NOVA images you've posted, SN---their amongst my faves. Yeah, MARVEL did revamp NOVA quite a bit for ANNIHILATION, but then made the mistake of waffling between that incarnation and his old incarnation in his own, recently cancelled series.

DnA (a pair of writers whom I love) started out with the right idea for the Human Rocket (I loved the VERY Magnum/Higgins-like banter between Rich and the original Worldmind avatar), but then got bogged down by, I can only guess, Marvel editorial mandates along with too many "events" that they had to try to find a way to tie into, even though NOVA was never really involved in the ones that counted.

The good news for us NOVA fans is, from rumours we've been hearing, apparently Rich will be headed back to the printed page (don't know in what format) in 2012, so we have that to look forward to....

                Hmmmm....

Weird thing; Marvel doesn't seem to catch as much flak for changing their characters' outfits as DC. I wonder why? Nova there is WAY sentai'd up, and nobody seems to mind. Maybe 'cos the Marvel ones just sort of happen, but we're bludgeoned about the eyes with the DC ones?

Other weird thing: In the pic where he's punching out the green guy, he REALLY reminds me of Dredd for some reason.

Well, NOVA has a definite reason for the uniform change that also had a truly logical explanation. As the last survivor of Xandar after the Annihilation Wave pretty much totalled it, the WorldMind, which is the reservoir of all the collected Xandarian knowledge and personalities and protector of the Nova Force (a force, we've heard, is similar in power scale to The Phoenix Force), told Rich Rider he was to become the receptacle of EVERYTHING Xandarian that was left, including the entire Nova Force. The Worldmind restructured Rich's uniform to help him withstand the mental and physical rigors of caring around that much energy and knowledge without going all Dark Phoenix on the universe....

I never drew a correlation between Rich's new appearance and Judge Dredd, but I suppose there actually IS a similarity. Could be because DnA are not only big fans of Dredd, but also have written a few Dredd stories, if memory serves.

BTW, the green guy Nova's taking out is Drax the Destroyer. For being a long-tme Marvel "lightweight," Nova also singlehandedly destroyed Annihilus at the end of ANNIHILATION----a pretty astounding feat for a third-stringer...

Maybe it has to do with the fact that marvel has been changing their heroes costumes since the 60's and we have accepted the thought that their costumes can change at anytime.

                    Iron Man's armor changed
Hank Pym changed his identity like his underwear
                    The Wasp
                    Namor
The X-men....hell they changed the team...lol
                    Spiderman
                    Namor
                    and the rest........

                      >NOVA has a definite reason for the uniform change that also had a truly logical explanation.

I might argue that even with the all new power a costume change isn’t a necessity; and it’s possible that the whole thing is a feed back loop: we want him to have a new costume so we come up with a reason, which forces him to have a new costume....

....but it could be a better way of illustrating my point: that the Marvel changes just sort of happen. They slip in during the story; whereas DC has a habit of changing stuff as part of the annual reboot; adding it to a circumstance that already agitates the fans.

                      >Maybe it has to do with the fact that marvel has been changing their heroes costumes since the 60's

That could be it too; and the examples you cite all have in-story reasons for the changes. Upgrades to Iron Man’s armour, new identity and powers for Pym, Wasp being a slave to fashion.... DC changes their stuff too, and always has; but it was more often the result of the inevitable drift when you change artists, and not a story point.

....unless Batman had to draw attention away from Robin’s injured arm or some such....

                      >Spiderman

That’s a tricky one ‘cos I remember people losing their minds over the black costume. It was also around the time you had the beginnings of an established “comic shop” fan base. Maybe that had something to do with it?

                      >I never drew a correlation between Rich's new appearance and Judge Dredd,

That’s okay; in the last pic he kinda reminds me of the Guyver.... with deployed megasmashers....

Just the idea a homemade outfit could be made to look that good, AND get the reaction it did from the audience, could quite possibly get studio execs to explore the idea for a movie. Or at least a cameo in an a existing series.

Ahhh----but the reasons FOR his new uniform and WHY he has to have it are all fully explained in here...

Plus it has some truly great and funny dialogue between Drax the Destroyer and the Worldmind (via Rich's new helmet) and the lone surviving girl that Rich finds on Xandar (her name and purpose escapes me at the moment).

It was a GREAT re-introduction to the character....!
