Yeah, Challenge was supposed to introduce Captain Marvel into the Super Friends. Oddly enough, HB couldn't use the Marvel characters because Filmation had the animated rights after the live action Shazam series ended, but HB ended up making a new live action Shazam (and Sivana and Aunt Minerva) in their "Legends of the Super Heroes" specials!
Clockwise from Sivana looks like Sinestro, Captain Cold, Joker, some blond (Beautia Sivana, Black Canary!?!), Penguin, Abra Kadabra, Poison IVy, Heat Wave, King Kull, Grodd, Mr. Atom, and Cheetah.
NO Superman villains at all! And he ended up having 4 on the LOD team.

As far as the Legion of Doom and their headquarters go, were they only in the season titled The Challenge of the Superfriends?
Pretty much. In the "Lost Episodes" that first aired overseas in the early 80s, there is at least one episode where the LOD is mentioned. It's in a team-up with Grodd and Giganta. Individual members showed up again such as Luthor, Riddler and Brainiac. Luthor and Brainiac of course got makeovers for the Super Powers era shows, and Bizarro and Scarecrow returned with new designs in the last season.
I wonder if they were planning to replace Superman with Captain Marvel, Billy Batson would appeal to the kiddies. Maybe the Filmation show thre a monkey wrench in those plans.

The lost episodes also contain a episode called "Revenge Of Doom" which does have the entire LOD but only three members have speaking parts.
So the LOD was originally a redesign of the Monster Society. And I always thought it was just a renaming of the Secret Society.
That is cah-ray-z.
I'm really surprised we didn't see a nod to this version on either B&B or Justice League.
Oh yeah, don't forget they couldn't use Joker and Penguin due to New Adventures of Bat-Man.
On second look, it does appear Superman and Aquaman were not going to be in the mix. Sort makes sense for Superman considering Donner had just started his movie around the same time.
Considering how many females were in this version, I have to wonder if they were also going to drop Robin for Batgirl or maybe include Supergirl.
