    Aquaman-Death of a Prince

Hey, I've been reading this one and I'm on the 3rd or 4th story, and I really like it. Have any of you read this yet? What did you think? (no spoilers, please).

I bet this kind of stuff would have cracked the internet in half if it existed back in the day.

DC's sales were in the toilet in the seventies and all kinds of "stunts" of shocking, seemingly status quo changing stuff was going on in these days.

Wonder Woman going Diana Rigg sans powers and star spangled costume, breaking up Superman and Lois Lane (Lana triangle?), Killing Iris Allan, Speedy hooked on drugs, John Stewart as Green Lantern, making Green Arrow a beatnik with a beard, Teen Titans also getting out of their superhero uniforms, making Superman a TV news anchor etc.

This is considered a classic today because it's become such an important part of the Aquaman mythology, but at the time I don't think it really helped stop the cancellation of Aquaman's solo title (they moved him over to Adventure right?)

I've been thinking about that quite a bit of late. Could you imagine the internet carnage that would have happened when Stan decided to switch the Avengers with 3 third string villains and a Golden Age character that they hadn't quite figured out what to do with?
              Hey! Check out the pictures.

Although even by today's standards it is pretty shocking stuff. I'm hard pressed to think of any onscreen child death of this nature in contemporary all ages comics.

Maxine Baker perhaps, but by then Animal Man was fully Vertigo.

Actually the opposite...This storyline culminated in Adventure Comics #452
...Soon after Aquaman's solo title was revived for a short run. Didn't last long though and he was moved to Adventure Comics again during the Dollar Comics era.

Wasn't Speedy's daughter with Cheshire killed recently. Mave have been off panel.

It's really cool to see that Jim Aparo and to an extent Mike Grell artwork— he improved later. It's a little like looking at Perez's early work. There is something there, but both got so much better as they went along. I haven't looked at those comics in years.

But Aparo's 70s Aquaman and Brave and Bold work was top notch to me.

Yes ... This is what Happened in Cry For Justice ..
This is Why Green Arrow Killed...
Why Roy Lost his Arm ... and Joined Deathstrokes Mob...
Why Arrow went to Trial, forced by Barry Allen...
Gave up his Secret Identity, and Went into Hidding in The Brightest Day Forest or whatever that crap is.

& Cheshire's Son with Catman was basically Stolen .... and Catman decided it mighta been best not to Persure it, in hopes that the child was ina better home, rather than the parents He has now.

I don't have the issues handy, but it looks like it was off panel and Green Arrow finds the body...

But yeah... still pretty shocking when it happens. Even four decades apart.

Geoff Johns definitely loves giving his villains additional dimension and motivation, so it will be really interesting to see him revisit this in the pages of his Aquaman. Looking forward to having Black Manta as well defined a character as Sinestro, Captain Cold, Zoom and all the others he's given make-overs.

The artwork was fantastic. Jim Aparo was probably in his prime.
