I bought it because my local comic shop did one of the variant covers with a store picture on the cover. I haven't read an issue of Spider-man since the early 1990s. I tried reading this one, but I guess I'm too old, because I didn't understand a thing that went on. The art was too busy and crowded, the characters were never really introduced, Peter Parker seemed like a completely different person, and the story made zero sense to me.
As far as I'm concerned, it was a lost opportunity for Marvel, because there are a lot of new people buying this issue for the comic shop tie-ins, but this wasn't a good jumping on point at all.
I think Marvel has gotten as carried away with the Spider-Man franchise as they have with the X-Men franchise. It's crazy. No wonder no other books can survive (like anything in the Marvel cosmic franchise); the LCS shelves are all booked up with this crap. I liked it when there were only three Spider-Man titles: Amazing, Marvel Tales and Marvel Team-Up. Those were the good old days....!
sigpic Oh then, what's this? Big flashy lighty thing, that's what brought me here! Big flashy lighty things have got me written all over them. Not actually. But give me time. And a crayon.
The owner of my LCS presented me with a copy of this last week, he looked especially proud of how goofy it turned out. I haven't bought an issue of Spider-Man since the Peter Bagge issue and purchased it with the same feigned enthusiasm that I would buying kool-aid from the neighbour kid.

Funny, the only "outrage" I see regarding the New Spider-Man is coming mostly from you. The others are merely expressing their disapproval over the concept of killing off Spider-Man and putting his costume on somebody else. It's a tired old concept that has been done to death, and most people are fed up with this kind of gimmick.
To answer your question in this thread, I for one, find the Spider-Island arc absolutely ridiculous. I'm not outraged by it. I'm just rolling my eyes because instead of a great story arc, we have to wait out yet another silly gimmick. The only redeeming aspect is that at least they haven't killed off Spider-Man (at least not yet). And yes, I am buying these issues anyway. Why? Because I've been collecting Amazing Spider-Man since 1972, regardless of whether or not I like a particular issue or a particular arc. A collection is not complete if there are gaps. Capisce?
And for the record, I'm not a "Parker" fan. I'm a Spider-Man fan. Spider-Man and Peter Parker are one in the same.

What bugs me about this sort of thing is that back in the day, they'd run it with minimal fanafre. They've done stuff just as stupid before; but it was a couple issues out of the run. Now, they're ALL hyped up way beyond expectation. Maybe that's part of why folks get so steamed?
Anymore it appears Marvel only puts out X-MEN and Spiderman related titles and truth be told i'd rather spend the crover price on books from the back issue bin pick up a few Marvel Tales or Marvel team-up and read a good Spidey story
Spider-man Has Been On A Decline For Tha Past Few Years, To Many Stupid Arcs, Bad Art, Bad Stories, and Way To Many Gimmicks. This Spider-island Is Just Another Step On That Ladder Leading Downwards.
