*****MINOR SPOILERS*****
Just came back today from watching Captain America: The First Avenger.
The verdict?
I really liked it...almost loved it...almost...but liked it a lot.
Now...please don't hurt me...I'm quite benevolent...so take it easy on me, Cap fans...lol.
Better than Green Lantern? Duh....of course...no brainer...lol.
Better than Thor? Yes, by a nose.
Better than X-Men:First Class? I'd say a draw. First Class is a more thoughtful film...not in authenticity of course...meaning...comic book wise...Captain America wins hands down in that category...but I thought First Class was a film with a tad more substance. But in terms of pure adventure and old school fun...Captain America wins.
Captain America is a great comic book adventure faithful to the comic book...a patriotic feel good movie with lots of old school serial-type action...and of course...coming from the same director of The Rocketeer...Joe Johnston...the exact same type of film.
It worked as a stand alone WWII flick as well.
Chris Evans...an actor I always hated...FINALLY comes through in his best role EVER. I was expecting the same 'ol wisecracking obnoxious jerk a la Ryan Reynolds...but that persona was nowhere to be seen here...he played Steve Rogers with earnest enthusiasm...no wisecracking jokes...he was noble, brave, honest, patriotic, and came across as a true hero.
I loved the progression of his costumes...from his vaudeville one (which ironically, was the most authentic looking of them all, but was seen as the "humorous" costume)...to the soldier one with the triangular-badge-shaped shield...to the great-looking battle-badazz costume and famous round shield.
The entire supporting cast were great...especially the "dame"...and Bucky (a great hero as well).
Now on to the Red Skull...
To me...he was the weakest part of Captain America. Sure...he looked great...but I never got the feel that he was truly evil..as a matter of fact...he failed miserably compared to the real monster of WWII...Hitler. Just compared the death count between Red Skull and Hitler...not even close...Hitler wins by a landslide...lol.
Also...Red Skull came across as very inept...he never stood a chance...I actually felt sorry for the guy...lol.
I also didn't like Captain America using a gun...and he did kill a few baddies...an act quite not as benevolent as other superheroes...but I guess that was early in his career...and it was during WWII...so he gets a pass...lol.
BTW...for all you CGI haters...Chris Evans as the skinny little Rogers...would have NEVER been possible without that technology...that's where CGI truly shines...I for one...thank Zeus, Odin, and Jesus for CGI...CGI is not your enemy...CGI is your friend...lol.
I have a question though...how and why did the Allies outgunned HYDRA soldiers and their rayguns so easily? I quite didn't buy that...last time I checked...superior weaponry beats inferior weaponry...lol.
Overall...a really good flick...right up there with First Class, Iron Man, and Spidey...but not quite up there with Superman 1 & 2 and Nolan's Batman films.
Just my opinion, guys and gals...just my opinion...I'm not here to judge anybody's take on it...just my opinion...
