Okay, I'll get this out of the way in the first paragraph...this is the best comic book movie I have seen, period.
I was so impressed with the respect they paid to not only the costumed avenger, but to Steve Rogers. Much like Superman is truly Clark, Cap is Steve, a man of honor, hope and belief. The choice to make this film as a period piece was perfect and was executed to perfection.
Casting - Anyone who thought Chris Evans was a poor choice for Cap, including myself, was epically wrong. I never thought it would be possible to disassociate him with his previous, smartass work, but he gets totally lost in this role. Every line comes out with complete conviction and is completely believable. He really is a man with inhuman physical gifts, but with the same frailties we all have in self-doubt, anger and jealousy. Evans is truly remarkable.
I'd grown tired of Tommy Jones over the years that he plays the same character in every movie. This is no exception. However, this time it's perfect for the role, grumpy yet wise, distant yet understanding. Weaving's Red Skull is a very subtle, understated performance. He could have gone over the top with this, but kept it pretty close to his blood-soaked leather vest. It was cool to see Ed McDonough as Dugan, didn't know he was in the movie.
PLOT - It was a great build up to Steve getting his serum and letting us into his life prior. The Hydra technology was slightly hard to believe for 1942, but it's a comic movie so some logic has to be thrown out the window. I really liked the way Cap was initially shunned by the troops and how he was initially nothing more than a propaganda tool. I haven't seen Thor, so I was unsure how they introduce the Cosmic Cube into the film series, but I knew enough about it from the books.
Effects - I saw the 3-D version, so there was some cool stuff happeining, especially with the shield action. One in particular actually made me flinch. The slow-mo was at a minimum, but at times mirrored some of the effects 300 had. It really brought out how badass Cap really is.
Bottom line - The overall package is the most impressive comic film I could imagine. Captain America is both fun and inspiring. It manages to show off some cool superhero action while highlighting the personal qualities that make Cap easily equal to Superman in heroics and morality. I was not expecting this level of film making and am most pleasantly surprised how well they pulled this off. With all of the heavyweight movies this Summer, it's unknown how well this will do financially. All I know is this is, by a wide margin, the best movie I've seen this year and the best comic adaptation I've ever seen.
