    Captain America - spoiler-free review

Okay, I'll get this out of the way in the first paragraph...this is the best comic book movie I have seen, period.

I was so impressed with the respect they paid to not only the costumed avenger, but to Steve Rogers. Much like Superman is truly Clark, Cap is Steve, a man of honor, hope and belief. The choice to make this film as a period piece was perfect and was executed to perfection.

Casting - Anyone who thought Chris Evans was a poor choice for Cap, including myself, was epically wrong. I never thought it would be possible to disassociate him with his previous, smartass work, but he gets totally lost in this role. Every line comes out with complete conviction and is completely believable. He really is a man with inhuman physical gifts, but with the same frailties we all have in self-doubt, anger and jealousy. Evans is truly remarkable.

I'd grown tired of Tommy Jones over the years that he plays the same character in every movie. This is no exception. However, this time it's perfect for the role, grumpy yet wise, distant yet understanding. Weaving's Red Skull is a very subtle, understated performance. He could have gone over the top with this, but kept it pretty close to his blood-soaked leather vest. It was cool to see Ed McDonough as Dugan, didn't know he was in the movie.

PLOT - It was a great build up to Steve getting his serum and letting us into his life prior. The Hydra technology was slightly hard to believe for 1942, but it's a comic movie so some logic has to be thrown out the window. I really liked the way Cap was initially shunned by the troops and how he was initially nothing more than a propaganda tool. I haven't seen Thor, so I was unsure how they introduce the Cosmic Cube into the film series, but I knew enough about it from the books.

Effects - I saw the 3-D version, so there was some cool stuff happeining, especially with the shield action. One in particular actually made me flinch. The slow-mo was at a minimum, but at times mirrored some of the effects 300 had. It really brought out how badass Cap really is.

Bottom line - The overall package is the most impressive comic film I could imagine. Captain America is both fun and inspiring. It manages to show off some cool superhero action while highlighting the personal qualities that make Cap easily equal to Superman in heroics and morality. I was not expecting this level of film making and am most pleasantly surprised how well they pulled this off. With all of the heavyweight movies this Summer, it's unknown how well this will do financially. All I know is this is, by a wide margin, the best movie I've seen this year and the best comic adaptation I've ever seen.

    I agree with you 100%!
I took my son to the midnight showing last night (along with a friend and his son) and was blown away! I don't want to add much for fear of spoiling anyone's fun but the quick view of a familiar red-clad figure at the expo was worth the admission alone!
I flinched at that sheild scene too!

I have to agree with Scott. I may not be able to put it above my cherished Superman:The Movie or the Nolan Bat-films, but I think it is at least the equal of those in getting the character absolutely right, and certainly now my favorite Marvel adaptation. And it's just a great movie...period.

I too was surprised by just how perfect it all gelled. The cast, the direction, the look, the feeling was just dead-on. I got that 9-year old comic geek grin throughout pretty much the whole thing.

There are so many little things in this movie that are a love letter to the fans. They put a comic nod in everywhere they can, but it in no way distracts from the common movie goers experience.

If you ever liked Cap, or just like damn good movies, go see this movie... RIGHT NOW!!!

Saw it in 2d at 5 pm and echo all of Scott's sentiments, it was a beautifully crafted, well made film. It was so good I held a pee for almost an hour. Weaving was amazing as Red Skull, right down to his Berliner accent and Evans was the core of the film, just great.

I miss all the comic knods in these though, I'm not as geeky as I thought. I only got the really obvious ones.

My 4:30 showing was pretty full for that time of day. About 3 times the people I saw at Green Lantern, also before most office and 1st shifters got off work.

I liked it alot! It is a must see but certainly not the best superhero movie ever.

The full voice on the pre-Cap Rogers didn't seem right at first but either it got better or grew on me.

they did the source material justice while adapting it well to film.

plenty of stuff just for comic geeks but still enjoyable for a non comic movie goer.

i liked both costumes used in the film.

people coming out of the theater seemed much more excited than with any of the other 3 recent superhero films.

My brother and I just saw this. Neither one of us are Cap fans, but we both enjoyed this movie.
