Captain America - The TV movies

Anyone watching these? I've immersed myself in Captain America goodness tonight and while the TV movies were fun, I couldn't help but snicker at the pure cheese of the concept regarding the infamous "flag" serum. They didn't really know how to dress Cap' until the very, very end when he got his classic costume (but still needed work on the head section). The second film they masked him and refined the wings on the helmet so that he had more of a "hero" look to him. But the story took forever to set up before Cap ever made an appearance, so that one was less engaging. It's easy to see why he didn't make series. The producers didn't seem to know what to do with Captain America as much as they did with Steve Rogers. And I think kids lost interest because of that. I don't even remember the second one that clearly. The shield was awful looking. But they were fun nonetheless, if only in a nostalgic way.

I recently watched these for the first time in 20 years thanks to a fellow member here. I caught the end of the 2nd movie last night as well. MAN, did they go overboard with the long, drawn-out shots of Cap on his cycle and this hang-glider/cycle combo. Yes, it was kind of cool, but dang! His flight chasing a 70s station wagon took like the last 20 minutes!!!

I dug the second movie a bit the first one bored me as it did when i first saw it.....when I was a kid I wanted it to be set in the 40's not modern day like they did with the first season of wonder woman......70's tv movies have a real cheesy and corny feeling to them.....I have a hard time sitting through them
at least the second one has cutie Connie Sellecca in it.....

The shield was crappy looking and him wearing the helmet all the time drove me nuts....I guess they were trying to reel in the Evel Knievel crowd in.....

          I saw the entire min-marathon...lol.

It was pretty cheesy...like you said...I hated the see-through shield and motorcycle helmet as well...even when I first saw it as a teen...lol.

...and why not have the more authentic-looking costume (shown at the very end)...just showcased from the very beginning? Why the tacky suspense?...

And why did Steve Rogers need the Flag Serum for? He was already buffed like hell...

Notice they said Super Steroid in the beginning...but changed it to Flag Serum later...

One positive thing...and although Reb Brown couldn't act his way outta paper bag...he did look like Steve Rogers...more so than 1990's Matt Salinger with his silly fake plastic ears...lol.

P.S. Oh yeah...I also hated the Six Million Dollar Man special-effects sounds...lol.

You know Hec I kind of enjoyed the SMDM sound effects. I guess it just made it even more 70s to me. Reb Brown made a pretty goood Cap for the 1970s too. Really looked the part. As chessy as both movies were it was fun to re-watch them again. I have them all on either DVD or tape but never watch them but seeing them on TV I couldn't turn away

OH MAN. I didn't know they were going to be on. Oh well, I don't have cable anyway.

I hate the first one so bad that i sold the VHS on ebay years ago.

the second one I like for nostalgia and cheese. it even has a bareable story and some fun vehicles and action - at least the costume is right.

I remember watching these when they originally aired ( yea, I'm THAT old ) and if I remember correctly the scene at the end of the first movie where he has a drawing of the more traditional looking outfit that he wears in the second movie wasn't in the original version, it was added when they made and the second movie.

I haven't seen those things in YEARS. Probably for the best. I remember loving them so much, I think that it would just ruin it for me.

Captain America was a fun piece for it's day, but still a tough watch because it never followed anything resembling Cap's true origin. It was a pretty flimsy script, even by 70's standards. But I give it a passing grade because it allowed us to see Cap in his comic book outfit at the end of the first movie and throughout all of the second one. That was something of a novelty back then. Those were the days when the average person had no clue who Stan Lee was. And getting any comic book character on television was a huge score no matter how it looked.
