Mattel says Green Lantern toys are a hit

Mattel's second quarter profit jumped an amazing 56%. And the movie tie ins to Lantern and Cars 2 were especially profitable. THIS is why a second Lantern film is possible and why so much of what is missing in ticket receipts is made up with toys.

Box office is just one part of the financial structure for why films get made now. There's potentially a lot more money in licensing of all kinds, product placement and tie-ins.

My opinion is that anything lost on Green Lantern is just an investment anyway. WB is in the unique position of owning the IP. The IP is more valuable then any one film and exposure on this scale just increases the IPs value.

For all we know, the production cost vs. box office can allows WB to show a loss and save them millions in taxes too.

Lantern stuff has been out for quite a while now though. And Emeraldknight and I actually saw new figures that contained the Guardians. Clearly the market has been there and has been substantial enough to sweeten Mattel's bottom line. I have no doubts a sequel will get made.

Well, I hope you're right, but being a bit of a negative nelly here, the orders for these products were made BEFORE the movie didn't meet expectations. Sell-thru still has to happen. In my neck of the woods, the figures seemed to move pretty well at first, but after about the 1st or 2nd week, the amount of product seems to have remained the same. As some have stated, Target is already marking some of the figures down (although Target is much more aggressive in clearance than any other major chain I know of).

If GL does gangbusters on DVD, I think that will determine if a sequel is made. Strong merchandise orders AND sell-thru won't hurt either. Just my take.

That's good to hear, although the movie toys were also building on some terrific non movie Green Lantern lines as well... Particularly since Blackest Night really gave you not only the various colored lantern characters, but variants of dcheroes such as Batman and wonder woman as not only lanterns, but zombies.

So how could the Green Lantern retros not have been a win with all that hype behind all things lantern in the past year?

Market awareness. Even my pal Emeraldknight never knew there was a Mego Lantern available.

I see plenty of GL toys hanging around here everywhere in the Midwest. I think a lot of them will end up warming the pegs such as the last Iron Man movie toys.
