Captain America title dropped in three countries...

...Russia, Ukraine and South Korea (they will show the movie though).

They will go with just THE FIRST AVENGER title.

China only allows 20 foreign films per year...and Captain America will probably not be shown there...

Oh No They Didnt! - Countries drop 'Captain America' from film title

Now...I'm not really a super patriotic-kinda of a guy...meaning...I'm not into cheering USA, USA, USA...I don't do the MEXICO, MEXICO, MEXICO, chant either...that's just not my thing...

    ...however...

What the friggin' big deal about Captain America???

I wouldn't have a problem if the movie was called Captain Russia, Captain Ukraine, and Captain South Korea...so I don't get it...all the other countries showing the movie will probably go with Captain America...except these three countries...and I thought South Korea was our friends...perhaps we should withdraw our forces out of there...and let them fend off North Korea by themselves...lol.

    Thoughts?

What’s the big deal about the big deal? U.S. film distributors routinely change the names of films for local markets. Lots of bands (“The English Beak”, “Charlatans U.K.”, etc…) in the U.S. have changed their names to avoid conflict as well.

Might as well get into a discussion about why “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” had it’s title changed to “Blade Runner” for the film. Or “We Can Dream It For You Wholesale” was changed to “Total Recall” for that film. Heck, “Robotech” is “Macross”, “Southern Cross” and “Mospeda” mixed together.

It’s far more disturbing to me that the first “Star Wars” film will be known as “Star Wars: Episode IV: A New Hope” a gajillion fanboys.

Oh, did you know Takara’s “Henshin Cyborg” line of action figures were born out of the imported “Combat Joe” (based on G.I. Joe) not selling well in Asian countries in the early-1970s/late-1960s due to the Vietnam war happening; Asian kids weren’t too hot on playing with U.S. toys you know.

It's like the Michael Bay film Pearl Harbor when it played in Japan. Maybe that's why he made the film so bad. He wanted to be sure it got screened in Japan so he fudged all the details.

Trying to screen a film called Captain America in another country is difficult. Having the main character named after our country rubs it in their faces and the studio thinks they won't see it for that reason. They may think it's all about American Nationalism and might not get it is a comic-book character. Heck, they may not have even learned about WWII and the Nazi's.

Other countries have a different view of us-many hate us. They just see us as trouble because that's what they've been told to think. They do not have the variety of free press we have. Or the myriad TV programs. They have full time propaganda machines that always tell them we are bad, and we do bad things in the world. You take the Middle East. We should have powerful transmitters there to broadcast nearly everything Americans can view on TV and expose our culture to them uncensored. They would be shocked and aghast at how open and modern our society is. Also they would not believe the propaganda being churned out that we are the evil devils of the world.

yeah i don't see the big deal, if I was the maker of the film I would'nt allow it to be shown if they'd pull something like that...

either play it as Capt.America or don't play it at all

Also, how do you think a character such as the U.K.’s “Captain Britain” would play over here? Would anybody in the U.S. really get excited about seeing a British superhero in the U.S.?

It really has very little to do with nationalism or anti-America sentiment; the concept just won’t translate well in other countries.

I am re-watching*“Star Blazers” right now and anybody who knows the original series (“Space Cruiser Yamato”) knows the central concept of the Yamato would never play well outside of Japan because few really would relate to or understand the concept of a World War II Japanese battleship being revived to do space battle. If you watch “Star Blazers” with the Yamato’s name changed to the Argo, the central story plays well and doesn’t need some nationality.

              Yes.

Might not be a huge hit...but we certainly wouldn't drop the Captain Britain name...and that's the point of my argument.

You do make an excellent point here though...I gotta agree with this...

ZING! But he’s “Bond, James Bond,” and not “Britain, Captain Britain.” And “On His Majesty’s Secret Service” is a title that is clearly British, but loose enough to be transported anywhere else. Much like “The First Avenger.” I mean technically, isn’t Diana Rigg the first “Avenger”

Captain America is Captain America. No subtlety there.

I'm just glad the makers of the film are staying fairly true to the spirit of the comic. How it gets distributed, is between the studio and each country. I can respect that.
