The first thing I think of is Iron Man too.

He always used a lot of black on his covers - it really stood out to me. Made the covers seem much more serious to me. As a kid I knew it meant his books meant business!

I knew his work from Marvel on Tomb of Dracula, but was never a big fan or Iron Man or Daredevil when he did those books.

It took a little getting used to when he took over Batman, but I really began to enjoy his art then. His run had a Batman as vampire arc that I thought was out-of-place but still neat at the time. It obviously influenced all the Red Rain stuff in the 1990s, which I didn't really care for.

He did a Phantom Zone mini series, I think with Steve Gerber, that was really cool. Very different take on Superman than I had ever seen at the time or really since.

He had a great way of portraying arrogance in characters, like Namor and Dracula and even Dr. Strange.

He was one of those artists whose style was unmistakable. Loved the way he drew Black Widow. And nobody made the ocean look as murky.

Did he ever work on Conan? I think he would have been great on the character.

It's nice that DC is reprinting some of his Batman work and Night Force in various formats. Of course, his work is all over various Marve Masterworks titles.

It is sad to see more and more of the silver-age greats pass on.

One of the best ever. Seemed like a really nice, decent-hearted guy from his interviews.

Loved this man's work from a very early age. His Sub-Mariner/Iron Man crossover fight is still the definition of each character to me.

Like Steranko to Fury, Ditko to Spidey or Jack to FF, Gene truly was responsible for making IM and DD credible designs. Without him, you have no alcoholic stark or Miller Daredevil. His work laid out the future tone.

Never was a big fan of Colan...but I have to say he does have definitive runs on Daredevil and Tomb Of Dracula. I can't say that his Doc Strange was a definitive run because IMHO Brunner and Ditko defined the character in 2 different era's. Met him at a Big Apple Show and he wasn't the most pleasant person to meet.

Another of the Silver/Bronze age artists passes...RIP Gene Colan.

A fantastic talent who will be sorely missed...my all time favorite Marvel comic is Gene's Captain America #256 "The Ghosts of Greymoore Castle"
