    DC's New 52 Titles: One Fan's Opinion

A little long-winded but here we go:

    1. JLA (Johns/Lee)
    2. JLI (Jurgens)
    3. Justice League Dark
On paper, Johns & Lee on JLA sounds like a dream team. But after seeing Lee’s costume redesigns and knowing he won’t be able to maintain a monthly schedule (neither can Johns for that matter) I’m somewhat skeptical. But DC is pushing for JLA to be their flagship title again…and with a high-profile movie in development they really can’t afford to screw this up. Still not sold on 3rd string characters from OTHER teams like Cyborg being on the JLA though.

With Dan Jurgens writing and Booster Gold as part of JLI I’m in for the start…Although apparently this is going to be Booster’s only title for the time being. Which makes me disappointed because Booster Gold was one of my favorite DC reads on a monthly basis (except for that recent Giffen/DeMatteis run). But I guess with all of this relaunch stuff going on now might not be the time to continue Booster’s story as a time cop. That would only convolute DC’s precious plans…

JL Dark is another that sounds interesting on paper…But this idea was recently done as Shadowpact and before that as Sentinels of Magic. So how long will this last.? And I question the franchising of the JLA name to a bunch of other teams…what is this? The Avengers?

    4. Action Comics (Morrison/Morales)
    5. Superman (Perez)
    6. Supergirl
    7. Superboy
Hoo-boy…where to start? OK, 1st and foremost I am against restarting Action Comics (and a few other titles) with a new #1. It’s just wrong IMO.

Now as for the content of Action….I’m not always a fan of Morrison’s high-concept approach but I’m willing to give this one the benefit of the doubt. And Rags Morales’ artwork will help push me a little more in to reading this. From the solicitation it sounds like the initial arc at least will be yet ANOTHER retelling of Supes’ origin. How many does that make it now in the last 5-10 years? Birthright, Secret Origin….

On Superman, George Perez’ artwork is an instant draw for me. BUT when was the last time George was able to maintain a monthly schedule as an artist, let alone scripting duties too? If memory serves the last time he really did double duty to any degree of success was on “Wonder Woman” ages ago.
Just realized that Perez is only doing breakdowns so maybe the monthly schedule will be attainable for him.

I’m curious if the new status quo the solicitations refer to is the dissolution of the Lois and Clark marriage…

Oh, the redesigns on Superman are just horrible. There was no need to abandon the classic look. That IS Superman…just check out the countless images on the Superman merchandise out there: Tights with red underwear? Check. Armor boots and knee pads? Uh, no.

Supergirl and Superboy…Besides my disgust at yet again costumes redesigns that just suck, I really have no opinion or interest on these two.

    8. Detective Comics
    9. Batman
Apparently even though other books/characters appear to be getting a fresh treatment, Batman is just continuing where he left off. Which is confusing…Is this a reboot or a relaunch (as DC refers to it) or a big disaster period?

    10. Batgirl
    11. Batwoman
Gail Simone on a Barbara Gordon Batgirl series is a no-brainer….But I have to question the hows and the whys of such a bold move considering the wheel bound Oracle character was very popular. Genie in the bottle sorta thing…

The long-delayed Batwoman finally being released…How she is going to fit in the DCnU now that Babs in back in costume remains to be seen. And how much older than Barbara is Kate Kane if she ‘s a Batwoman and Babs is just a girl?

    12. Batman The Dark Knight (Finch)
Dude can’t even maintain his monthly schedule just a few issues in and it’s already being relaunched with a new #1.

    13. Catwoman
    Judd Winick….Ugh

    14. Red Hood and the Outlaws
So Jason Todd is still around….bummer. DC seems to have an issue with making things simplier and easier for attracting new readers and yet we have 4 Robins in one form or another running around bumping into each other. It’s funny in Tiny Titans but not in the DCU proper.

Arsenal…with both arms? And perhaps no longer associated with Green Arrow? Wasn’t it just a short while ago GA killed Prometheus, went rogue with the JLA and Arsenal got his arm ripped off? Geez how time flies…

The solicitation makes me think this may be everyone’s first encounter with Starfire…which makes sense if the New Teen Titans never existed…

    15. Batwing
    More Winick and more crap…

    16. Nightwing
Well at least we don’t have two Batmen running around anymore…

    17. Batman and Robin
But apparently Damian isn’t going away any time soon….Ugh

    18. DC Universe Presents (Deadman)
So Adventure Comics bites the dust again…No respect for legacy…But that’s apparent throughout this whole list.

Deadman would be interesting, always a fan…but that’s before he came off the horrible representation in Brightest Day…

    19. Green Lantern (Johns/Mahnke)
    20. GL Corps
    21. GL:New Guardians
    22. Red Lanterns
The main book by Johns/Mahnke is the only one I will probably pick up….I’m getting burned out on the Lantern stuff. And I have to wonder how long Red Lanterns can sustain their own title. And it looks like the GL corner if the DCnU is going to remain untouched like Batman.

    23. Animal Man
    24. Swamp Thing
    25. Resurrection Man
Even though I’ve been a Grant Morrison basher of late, I enjoy stuff like his early Animal Man run. So I question what if anything ew can be brought to the table.

Swamp Thing I think I’ll be checking out. Always been a fan but really stopped reading it when he went strictly Vertigo. The Alec Holland angle is an interesting hook for me.

Resurrection Man…Never read it but I do understand it’s always had a cult following. I just question whether or not the fan interest is there to sustain a book

    26. Legion Lost
    27. Legion of Super-Heroes
Legion Lost….yet another umpteenth attempt to strand Legion members in the present time….Been there, done that…

LSH…Levitz is still on it so I’ll still be reading it even though I’m still not feeling it 100%. Had high hopes after the Legion of 3 Worlds mini-series but have been slightly disappointed.

    28. Birds Of Prey
BoP without Simone and Oracle is not worth reading….

    29. Teen Titans
This seems to have Clusterf’ written all over it….

    30. Savage Hawkman
I really don’t see how a mediocre writer like Tony Daniels is going to be able to save Hawkman where other better writers have ultimately failed. Unless this whole relaunch thing is able to give Carter Hall a completely blank slate. Which makes me question, why is it ok for some characters but not others (Batman, GL)?

    31. Wonder Woman
Well a year of JMS’ nonsense was a real waste of time it seems. Wonder Woman is starting to get a real stench on her than was previously reserved for characters like Hawkman and Aqua man (sorry Arthur buddy I love ya man but you know it’s true).

    32. Fury Of Firestorm (Simone/Van Sciver)
Simone and Van Sciver…I’m sold. Looks like Ronnie though is back to being in high school…Could sworn he was in college.

    33. Aquaman (Johns/Reis)
This should be in the Top 5 when it’s released, without a shadow of a doubt…

    34. Flash
Manapul on scripts? If Geoff Johns couldn’t make this turkey of a title work what makes DC think the horrible artist involved can do any better? I know a lot of people could care less about Barry Allen’s return but even he deserves better than this…

    35. Mr. Terrific
The only sign of a JSA member on this list….Things don’t look good for the JSA

    36. Green Arrow (Krul/Jurgens)
It’ll be interesting to see how much of GA’s back history that they throw to the curb. The Jurgens art might interest me…I dunno….

    37. Captain Atom
I really don’t think there’s any interest in this…DC has tried a couple of different approaches to Captain Atom and nothing really sticks…

    38. Grifter
    39. Voodoo
    40. Stormwatch
Not a fan of the Image stuff but I guess we gotta keep Jim Lee happy so he keeps designing horrible costumes. And adding the Martian Manhunter to Stormwatch sounds desperate.

I see these titles, along with Captain Atom as being some of the first to be axed…

    41. OMAC
What…maybe this will be the first be axed DiDio and Giffen? Pass. I used to be a fan of Giffen ‘s art back during his Legion days and his writing with DeMatteis on the old bwah-ha-ha JLA. But I find his work unreadable now. And as for DiDio, doesn’t have have other things to muck up? He shouldn’t even have time for scripting a series.

    42. Demon Knights
    43. Frankenstein:Agent of SHADE
    44. I Vampire
I will give DC props for trying to revive other genres instead of just super-heroes 24/7. But the proof will be in the execution.

Demon Knights sounds interesting…Madame Xanadu and Jason Blood in Camelot. But how long can you sustain a period piece like this? And Madame Xanadu’s title just tanked didn’t it? Maybe it’s too soon…

Frankenstein…This might be a sleeper hit. But I think they should have struck a bit sooner after the Seven Soldiers mini..which ended 5 years ago.

I Vampire…I always liked the original House of Mystery series. But I really don’t think it’s necessary to integrate Andrew Bennett into the DCnU proper now…

    45. Static Shock
Don’t know much about the character other than he appears to be DC’s answer to keeping their universe “diversified”…

    46. Hawk and Dove
Hawk and Dove is a cool concept but one that never lasts very long…Rob Liefeld art not withstanding

    47. Suicide Squad
    48. Blackhawks
    49. Sgt Rock and Men of War
And yet another Suicide Squad title..4th times the charm? The redesigns of Killer Shark, Harley Quinn and Deadshot look horrible. In fact a lot of the artwork on these cover solicitations looks horrible…above and beyond any dislike I may have for the costume redesigns. Just poor artwork IMO.

Blackhawks? Sgt. Rock? Both sound like stupid attempts to modernize old concepts. Especially the whole grandson of Rock thing. Sgt. Rock to me is a character whose story begins and ends in World War II. He’s NOT a legacy character.

    50. Blue Beetle
3rd times the charm for Jaime? Couldn’t hold his own series, or even a back-up…and he’s rewarded with yet another series. What will be different this time around? I finally realize he’s here to stay…But put him on a team if you need to….don’t force feed him in a solo title that won’t sell.

    51. All-Star Western
Obviously this replaces Jonah Hex…one of the best titles DC had IMO. Still by the same team but now Jonah is doing stuff in Gotham City. Unnecessary IMO…just tell a good western story, no need to tie it in to the DCU. What’s next? The return of post-apocalyptic HEX?

    52. Deathstroke
If the old New Teen Titans never existed (which is what I’m assuming)…Then where does Deathstroke fit in? And aren’t there a bunch of old Deathstroke issues from the 90s in the $1.00 bins? He’s good as an occasional villain, not a monthly headliner.

My consensus: I see myself starting with about 21 of these first issues and then cutting it down where need be after that. Although I'm REALLY tempted to just quite altogether....It's painfully obvious that DC is no longer interested in maintaining longtime readers....just attracting new ones.

The whole mess really was pointless when they planned on doing this anyway. I was going to go back to the title after JMS got bored and Wondy returned to normal. Now, meh, I know that's not going to happen. She is still stuck in a 90s pantsuit outfit but now in untraditional silver, with a silly choker to coordinate with the nehru collars of the guys. And why is she stuck in a pantsuit and Supergirl gets bare legs? So much for the mandate. Oh, well, it doesn't really matter.

You, know, I've endured all the depowering, stupid biker outfit, recent 90s jacket suit, etc. But it gets to a point, when you just feel apathy. Hopefully the new Wonder Woman will be treated with better care and repect than the one I loved and grew up with and will resonate with female readers. Girls need heroes too.

Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

Dude .. I'm getting all the Lantern Books ...

So Jurgens on GA ..., No Booster ... I'll get the book because of Jurgens ..., sorta Bummed No More Booster. The Time Stream Stories are Endless ..., each 1 Jurgens was a part of , were some of my Favorite Stories in the last few Years.... I dunno what to think.

Teen Titans with Booth ..., I'll give it a shot.

I'm So there on Aquaman ....

      I'll probably Give Firestorm , JLA, Deathstroke & Batgirl a Shot ....

Red Hood and the Outlaws seems like an Interesting Concept .... Perhaps thats my Secret Six Book , which I love. But I am really ****ed off at the Squad Idea, and no more Six ....

I dunno what I am more upset about ... Loosing Booster Gold with Jurgens..., or the Secret Six. Both books were on my pull list ... I only currently buy 7 titles a Month ... sorta Lame.

I'm not touching anything Superman witha 10 Foot Poll ..., but JLA .

All in all ... DC ..., I'm just sorta not happy.

Frankenstein, Action and Batman Inc or Liviathan or whatever it ends up being called. Will trade wait for all. I'd sample some digitally if they were cheaper for downloads. I'd try Deadman, OMAC and the Dark JLA if it were a buck chaper or so. Wonder if JSA, Booster, SHazam, etc are waiting in the wings to start up in 2012 with INC? Maybe they will be replacement titles when a lot of this CRAP tanks.

I've been out of monthly books for a few years now, but I can honestly say NOTHING that has been solicited will motivate me to enter a comic shop.

I think DC has made a horrible tactical error with this relaunch. They have alienated the few diehard fans they had left, and are relying on nostalgia for two different comic companies (90s Marvel and early Image) to save them and attract new readers. I got news for you, DC isn't Marvel, the JLA isn't the X-Men, and most Image comics from the early 90s are best used as bird cage liners.

The creative teams on these are just...arbitrary. Despite a few solid names (Perez, Morrison, Jurgens, Johns) most of the rest are unknowns or old Marvel writers who disappeared off the radar 10 years ago. DC had a better showing of talent with "One Year Later" a few years back. That gave readers a good jumping on point, and good talent, and it apparently didn't set the world on fire. Although most of the A-listers jumped ship pretty quick.

It will be interesting to see how the panels go at SDCC this year. I can imagine a very hostile crowd to show up, or none at all.

With the mess DiDio has made of the DCU in his tenure, I can see why a reboot is necessary. I would have never imagined a reboot could have been worse than what was there before.

I'm reminded of DC's advertising slogan in the early 80s. Except I have to twist it around a bit:

"The NEW DC: There's No Stopping THEM Now!!!"

That's what I'm thinking....along with stuff like the rumored Darwyn Cooke Vigilante and the Kevin Maguire My Greatest Adventure. They'll have to have a back-up plan (you'd think anyway) when some of these titles tank very quickly.

It almost seems like they knew that fan reaction to some of these reboots was going to be bad so they threw a few names on them like a Perez to appease them. Now Morrison definitely probably has a plan and I would assume was part of these discussions for the relaunch. But George seems like just a hired gun to draw interest and carry out DC's directive.

A lot of the other writers are either ex-Marvel guys who haven't been relevant in ages or new people who I've never heard of. If you're going to pull off something as potentially volatile and alienating as this, then you really need to have writers with a proven track record as well as a fan base to see it through.

Personally I think they're beating a Dead horse......and just haven't come to full terms that comics just don't sell like they used to and maybe for a season Heroes are just not going to sell well.....

The 50's went through this when Horror and Crime comics outsold superhero comics by a large margin.......

Plus look how many freeking heros are getting titles that please come on is anyone really interested in? Mr.Terrific? really? really?
Video games and Music have completely cut into this market my son talks about video games like I talked about comics at his age.

He saves his money to get I tunes cards and is online playing with all his high school friends and there is never ever talk about heros. I even asked him did any of his friends see the X-men movie and he said no.......

I'm not saying that's every kid but there is a large market of kids that have dismissed comics and the teen market is not one to be ignored.

With hot games like Black Ops, Gears of War, Assassins Creed and so on.. why comics of these popular games or other concepts have not been tapped into is missing the boat entirely. it was always about whatever was hot to jump on and make money....at least attract YOUNG readers and maybe get them into buying comics with these titles......and sorry not talking about the built in 40 year olds buyers who still buy whatever is put out.....

Anytime I see cosmetic changes it always seems that in the age of stockholders, executives put the Gun up to the creative people and try to make them sell the product however they can.....and totally forget that comics are not perfumes. You just don't change the bottle and think it'll be alright.

There are easy answers...Hire the true talents that know how comic books work, lower your prices and cut down your titles per month........but tell that to executive who's living the high life and he'll cut your head........

All-Star Western with Jonah Hex MIGHT not be set only in Gotham...maybe that's just the opener. And I read somewhere that there will be back-ups in it featuring other DC western heroes. Probably where you'll see that Cooke Vig story.

Agree with your assesments of the line. It's not really cohesive. I think you're right about there never being a Titans before, which is why they can make Cyborg such a major character post Flashpoint. Bet he gets a new origin as well.
Wonder if that affects the Titans 'GAMES' graphic novel? It was solicited already wasn't it?

^ They've sort of travelled down this road before with the Titans...with Donna Troy and again with Beast Boy/Changeling when he was retconned outta the Doom Patrol...negating some great stories from the Wolfman/Perez era. And with Deathstroke getting a title again how does his origin change if there are no Titans? Same with Starfire over in the Outlaws book.

^Yeah, given the comments by some of the creators, it does seem like this is an "all or nothing" attempt to save floppy comics at DC. This is just pure speculation, but maybe WB is thinking if this doesn't work, time to axe the whole line and just produce a steady stream of OGNs and reprint TPBs for book stores.

But I think that THIS effort is going to totally backfire. Nothing I've seen here looks like it will appeal to the younger set much (unless that younger set was locked in a comic shop basement with unsold 90s Image comics for 10 years). And they have obviously alienated a LOT of the remaining fans, and fans that would have possibly come back with a more "back to basics" approach.

                              >They should do focus groups like this if they're going to reboot an entire line

I dunno; I think that’s part of the problem. They’re trying TOO hard to appease the perceived audience, and it leads to clunky, changing books. I really think they should just do their books.... regardless of public hue and cry.... and do them appropriately. So; don’t try to squeeze Batman into an old west book just ‘cos he’s one of your top sellers. Don’t plan on pumping a character ‘cos there’s a lot of buzz NOW. It’ll be gone in a month. Just do the damned books and let the public decide what they like. You might be surprised. (Seriously, 50 VOLUMES of “The Prince of Tennis?!?!?!” WHO’S buying them?!?)

                              >This whole thing feels like a last ditch effort to turn a profit.

Well.... I don’t think it’s that dramatic; but they ARE desperately searching for the “next big thing.” Sadly, by doing the same old things. Literally; in most cases on this list.

                              >Nothing I've seen here looks like it will appeal to the younger set much

Agreed; and not just from the absence of emo vampires. If the kids are already avoiding Batman, MORE of him isn’t going to thrill them.

                              >I guess 40 years of loyalty means nothing anymore

Sentiment like that makes me sad. I would HOPE 40 years of loyalty got you 40 years of entertainment. Even if the new stuff sucks, it doesn’t change that.
