Batman should be contractually obligated to punch him

Give the fans what they want.

It's been a while since Guy's been a funny jerkbag, but c'mon, we all revert whenever we hang out with folks from grade school/high school/college/back home. I'd say Bats and Guy bring out the worst in each other to entertaining effect.

If I recall Bats did hit Guy back in the Justice League title in the 1980's. Guy developed a split personality for a while.

Could someone tell me just how this butthead became a Green Lantern? Doesn't the ring screen for that sort of thing?

Oh, wait.....maybe not. That would explain Sinestro, although he doesn't really qualify as a butthead.

He's something else that I can't say on this board.

But it's a seven letter word that starts with the letter 'a', and ends in the word 'hole'.

I doubt Batman would need a contract for that.

He was originally a nice guy who worked with kids. At the time Abin Sur was dying and had to choose a successor, there were two candidates... Guy and Hal that would be worthy. Abin chose Hal because he was closer.

Guy subsequently became Hal's substitute Green Lantern, but suffered a head injury that left him in a coma. Hal then stole his girlfriend and they almost got married.

Just prior to Crisis on Infinite Earths, Guy was brought back by the Guardians for whatever mysterious reasons to be their new champion. He was terribly brain-damaged and was a total tool with an attitude.

However, in my opinion, that made him the perfect "spoiler" character for the 80's incarnations of both the Green Lantern Corps (that was based on earth) and the Justice League. As much as we'd all like our superheroes to all get along, the truth is that the best teams have a degree of internal conflict that actually makes them interesting to read. Otherwise they are sitting around sharing lemonade... not really that exciting. Thus you have guys like Hawkeye in the early days of The Avengers who just walk into a room and kick over a table.

What I've always liked about Guy was that he did it with a ridiculous amount of humour (yes, we were laughing AT him). He invaded the Soviet Union at the height of the cold war, he challenged Batman's leadership in the JLI, he re-enacted Robert Deniro's date-gone-horribly-wrong with Cybil Shepherd from Taxi Driver, heck he beat up Marvel EIC Jim Shooter in Legends! Given the dismal nature of what constitutes humour in most comics back in the day, the fact that he was able to make me laugh out loud was worth it's weight in gold.

Gardner is the most entertaining of the Earth-based lanterns.

He's annoying, brash and a total jackass. The JLI books in the 80's were the most influential for me personally, and he was a huge part of that. Sure, Hal is the cocky hero type, John is the nonsense-challenged military man and Kyle is emotionally conflicted. All of those traits make good reading, but it's Guy's over-the-top personality and ego that make him stand out.

I don't know about anyone else here, but if I got some cool super powers, I'd probably be a total tool like him. I'd say and do what I was thinking and what I wanted with little regard for the outcome. Most inhibitions would be crushed. Despite his social shortcomings, he almost always does the right thing, the heroic thing. That makes him the most human in my eyes.

I almost had a psychic girlfriend but she dumped me before we met.

I think that was the best part.... he was SUPPOSED to be unlikable, and for the longest time they didn't do anything to change that. (I seem to recall a particularly disastrous date....) One thing I REALLY liked about the JLI run was that they made attempts to make the characters different from each other. They weren't all gooder than good (like the 70's run) or "GRRRR! I'm ANGRYYYYY!!!!!" (Like every superteam of the 90's.)
