IMO ... That's where Batman "Failed" so to speak ..., he was a different breed... and to me it's more interesting. But thats pretty much where I started reading comics. I dunno about this Pre-Crisis Nonsense.

Sorry BK, but the post-Crisis stuff is the "nonsense". As in it makes none.

But seriously, I do agree that maybe the original Jason was a bit TOO much like Dick.

But to readers at the time, the second, post-Crisis Jason came off as an unworthy substitute. It didn't help that Batman writer Max Allan Collins had Batman fire Dick for getting injured on the job, and then picked up an untrained street rat to take his place. The whole thing just didn't gel. I think Jason 2.0 got off on the wrong foot from the get-go.

Here is a link to an image of Jason's first costume, and he had already dyed his hair at this point:
Uncanny Comic Book Scans!: March 2010
I really liked that costume. There's a bit of the Earth 2 Robin in it, and it foreshadowed elements of Tim's first official Robin costume.

Making Jason a street kid was cool. It makes him unique. It's also a challenge for Batman to raise this kid who's been raising himself for years already. I'm convinced killing him off was more of a stunt then it was complaints from readers. I think killing him was a good idea. It's an interesting chapter in Batman history.

I dig elements of that costume in the link. It's a little goofy (the Sinestro collar needs to go) but I see how it would evolve in to Tim's much cooler costume.

The street kid angle CAN work, see the animated Tim Drake, who pretty much has Jason 2.0's origin. But Animated Tim was likeable, and Jason wasn't.

You young kids don't know nothing

Pre-Crisis, Killer Croc was responsible for offing the Todds...I like that better than Two-Face, who has often been used as Dick Grayson's "go-to" foe...

I think Winnick and DC took what they liked from both origins when the character was brought back from the dead.

But if Bleedingcool.com's rumor is right, it won't matter. The website is speculating (not reporting) that DC is going to have a line-wide reboot in September, flowing out of Flashpoint.

Reading that link makes me sad in a way....all of this constant rebooting and renumbering nonsense is starting to take its toll with me...While the Flashpoint universe may be "cool" to visit in a series of minis and special events, it's not something I want to be status quo for the DCU. Hopefully it's not as bad as I'm imagining....if it is I guess I'll just re-read my old issues where everything made sense...

I agree, Anthony, I mean, John's rebirth and secret origin mini series basically updated things for Superman, Flash and GL, Morrison's run on Batman has basically redefined Batman for good or ill. Who knows how much of JMS' aborted and then adopted by Phil Hester Wonder Woman project will stick.

I hope a reboot isn't in store. I just want some good stories and relatively fresh ideas, nice art to pass the time.

There's a campaign over at comicvine to get him an ongoing [and make him look like the animated movie Red Hood again, heh] since editorial asked if fans want a Jason Todd series. I love the street kid origin, they did more with him in a few issues than the first 35 years of Grayson

Actually Chris ... Going Back to Pre-Crisis, with Jason Todd, After 27 Years of Me reading Comics is Nonsense, and Makes None.

It makes even less sense, when you factor in Todd's actual character since He has been back in comics ...

Isn't that like reporting that tomorrow the sun will rise? (Well.... maybe not TOMORROW, but we'll see.) The line-wide reboot seems to be an annual event any more.

Right. The DC retconned all of that stuff. The first time Jason Todd was supposedly saw in the new DC Universe was with black hair trying to steal the wheels off the Batmobile.
I'm thinking with the recent DC time screw ups some things are going back to the actual storylines. That just makes it more confusing.
So now what? Do we still have a Wonder Woman (Queen Hippolyta) in World War II? DC confuses me.

That's one of the problems superheroes have too: what do you do when time in real life marches well past your story? Not just DC either. WW2 is a big problem; in the original Fantastic Four Reed and Ben met during WW2, when Reed was a supporter of the French Underground. That origin would make him 70+ years old now! The Robin/Robins thing is askance too: how big a deal are circus acrobats any more?

Show your Canuck pride man! Given how much I have to shell out for tickets every summer when they set up the big tent for sold out shows down at the Ontario Place Parking lot, it's big $$$.

It's artsy pretentious cricus acrobats, but acrobats nonetheless in constant rotation in dozens of shows around the world. In the reboot origin of the future, I'm sure Dick Grayson will eventually be a Vegas Cirque Acrobat.
