John Byrne's Fantastic Four Omnibus HC

FANTASTIC FOUR BY JOHN BYRNE OMNIBUS VOL. 1 HC
Written by JOHN BYRNE, CHRIS CLAREMONT, MARV WOLFMAN, BILL MANTLO, STAN LEE & ROGER STERN
Penciled by JOHN BYRNE, MIKE ZECK, JACK KIRBY & RON WILSON
    Covers by JOHN BYRNE
It was the world’s greatest comic magazine — again! Not since the days of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby had a creator so perfectly captured the intense mood, cosmic style and classic sense of adventure of Marvel’s First Family. Fresh off an earth-shattering and reputation-making run as penciler on UNCANNY X-MEN, John Byrne proved his writing talent was every bit the equal of his art as he pulled double-duty on FANTASTIC FOUR, launching Reed, Sue, Ben and Johnny into realms of imagination and wonder into which few creators before had dared to travel. From the four corners of the globe to the farthest reaches of space to the deepest depths of the Negative Zone, the FF face off against foes old and new — including the Dr. Doom, Galactus and Annihilus! Plus: The FF aid the Inhumans, bid farewell to the Baxter Building, don new costumes and celebrate their 20th anniversary in style as Byrne reminds us all there’s a family at the heart of this team of adventurers! Collecting MARVEL TEAM-UP (1972) #61-62; MARVEL TWO-IN-ONE #50; FANTASTIC FOUR (1961) #215-218, #220-221, #232-262 and ANNUAL #17; PETER PARKER, THE SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN (1976) #42; AVENGERS (1963) #233; THING (1983) #2; and ALPHA FLIGHT (1983) #4.

I always liked the Thing, but it was Byrne's work that made me an FF fan and prompted me to seek out as much as of the Lee/Kirby run that i could afford and find in reprints.

Waid and JMS and Millar's runs were pretty good, but mostly tweaking the same things Byrne had tweaked from the original run.

But, Anthony, if you haven't tried Hickman's FF, you might give it a shot. The guy's writing the most intelligent super-hero comics being produced today.

I would love to see him get a hold of Superman some day.

^ I read Waid's, Millar's and am currently reading Hickman's...they've all been ok but nothing like Byrne's IMO...

Me too, I loved reading Byrne's FF back in the day. This book will be tempting, although I haven't read the stories in probably 20 years. I'd hope they would still hold up for me.

I own ALL the original Byrne FF Comics...plus the trade paperbacks, because I like the nice paper. Still...I'd like to own that HC version.

I liked Byrne's issues of the FF just Before he did his classic run. I also have the whole run as well and was disappointed when he left.

This would be sweet to get

$67.95 preorder on Amazon, coming out in November. I think I'll order this, my first Marvel Omnibus.

Wow that's cool! Do you know if they plan on releasing more Kirby/Lee FF in this format?

I have the first two FF volumes and think they're great- even with their many faults.

I wonder what they are going to fill out the second omnibus with?

The Last Galactus Story? Incomplete unfortunately.

Joe Q is no longer EIC at Marvel (although he is still at Marvel). Perhaps Byrne would be willing to come back and do work for Marvel now.

I noticed in the comic shops the other day that Byrne has returned to Next Men.

I love that Byrne kept tinkering with the Thing during his run. When he drew the regular Thing he did it correctly, the way Kirby did it. He didn't do the alternate style most artists were doing before he signed on. I also liked that he thickened his drawing lines after the Negative Zone saga began, (probably after the sideways issue). I doubt he'll ever go back to FF. He often says fans prop that run up too much and he doesn't feel he can do better but I think he's just hiding behind an excuse. He has a very low tolerance for Editors who don't get along with him and I think he just doesn't want to lock horns anymore.

That's an unbelievable price given that it's listing as $125 in the solists for a mighty hefty volume.

Byrne was so great a mining nuggets from the Lee/Kirby run and expanding on or riffing off some those ideas and taking them to new and even more dynamic places.

I think my favorite was No. 136 — the double-sized issue — with Dr. Doom and Puppet Master. Very touching "what could have been" story. The pacing of the story was great.

The Galactus storyline where Frankie Raye became his herald was really cool. Loved the guest appearances by all of Marvel's main heroes. The cover homage to FF 26 was fun and FF 26 was inspired by King Kong.

                              Inhumans moving to the moon.

The FF annual dealing with the Skrulls who morphed into cows in FF No. 2 and how they infected the towns people was kind of genius.

                              The FF-Superman, I mean FF-Gladiator, battle.

The way he drew Dr. Doom

Also how he elevated one of the most superfluous characters in all of super hero comics — Invisible Girl — into one of Marvel's most powerful characters — Invisible Woman.

His What If issue where the FF were still heroes thought they didn't get their powers.

I always thought She-Hulk was such a stupid idea, until Byrne transformed her into a character one could not help but like.

The only thing Byrne didn't do in his run — or at least I don't remember — was a Hulk-Thing battle.
