    Adam Hughes ceases Con Sketches

This was a long time coming, and I've got mixed feelings. On the one hand, it would have been the only way I would have ever owned an Adam Hughes sketch, on the other, the one con that I attended where he was at he had some very set windows where he was signing and meeting with fans.

It will be interesting to see what other artists will follow suit.

To meet or get an autograph or sketch from your Fav artist for the real fan is pure joy. but in this day an age of the butt wipes who buy con sketches for nothing than sell them for triple the price has ruined it for everyone.

Back in the 80's and 90's it was fun to go around and get sketches but Ebay ruined that.
I don't blame Adam, he's a great talent and a really nice guy. but too many non fans take advantage. At least now he'll get his set price and get something out of it which he should. especially with his talent.

As a fellow artist i feel the same. It's my talent and a way I make money. I have set prices if you really want it you'll pay for it. If you can't well you'll just have to save up for it like anyone would do to buy any kind of other merchandise......

It's a shame it's come to that, but I'm not surprised. I've talked to Adam and Allison at cons and even back then, they mentioned being frustrated about people getting con sketches just to flip them. I'm glad I got my WW napkin sketch when I did, because it looks like that was my only chance.

At SDCC I ran to Frank Cho's booth as soon as I got in to see try and get a sketch, but he wasn't doing them and was only selling two of what he called sketch-prints which he was selling for a premium price. Even at four figures, that was still a bargain compared to what his stuff was going for on ebay. Realizing this was my only chance to ever own original Cho art, I blew my entire vacation budget within the first five minutes of the show.

Now I'm kind of regretting not trying harder for a Hughes sketch as well (even if I had to panhandle out front to get home). Every time I went by the AH! table, there was a sign saying that Adam was working on sketches and couldn't sign at that time. At least now he'll be able to chat with more fans and sigh their stuff at cons.

I had noticed that over the last couple of years AH's trademark sense of humor had been missing from his con sketches.

How hard is it to sign a book "AH!"??? I hope that this doesn't affect other artists doing sketches. I've been going to shows since the mid 80's and I NEVER got sketches because I never really thought to get them. Just getting to talk to an artist or creator was enough for me back then. I just started with my sketchbook and got an awesome Deathlok sketch by Rich Buckler. There are a whole bunch of artists I'd like to get to do a sketch...I hope this doesn't start a trend.

Their eyes can't hope to see
              The beauty that surrounds them
              Isn't it a pity".

                Hmmmm....

Good thing WW has her vitals protected by that armour....

Anhyhoo; it’s a Catch-22, isn’t it? Once you buy a sketch it’s yours, and you can do anything you want with it; including flipping it for profit. It’s a ****** thing to do, but it’s not illegal... and may not actually be immoral either. I think it’s symptomatic that the speculators are still a presence in the comic industry.

On the up-side, I’ve seen more than a few cartoonists put sketches on ebay. It helps undercut the speculators and ensures that the artist gets a bigger slice of the pie.
