FYI - Smallville was never allowed, contractually, to use Superboy or the costume from the onset. While we see it as one company with total ownership, WB has worked like a fifedom until TDK exploded. So the Smallville team could only use things the film producers agreed to, which was everything outside of what is deemed the IP or trademarks of Superman and Superboy.
The treatment of Smallville has been incredibly short-sighted from day one. There's a weird legality that it couldn't be made into the Superman film franchise without jettisoning everything and rebooting with Welling. The movie would literally have no connection to the show, and it has something to do with contention of ownership of Superboy with the Siegel estate, and the Salkinds on controlling rights, for some reason. It's not a coincidence Smallville is ending right when the Snyder's reboot starts. The show was technically on hiatus when Singer's version went into production, but the crappy reception made WB pick up the option before they lost everyone.
At some point, Welling will end up as Superman for a movie version, or whatever consists of a movie in the next decade. He's got three generations of kids and teens who recognize him as Superman and once they start referring to him as the litmus, which is really what Henry Cavill is about to run into, WB will set the table.
The best thing for Welling is the older he gets, the more he fits the character. Same for Rosenbaum.
Also, a lot of this has to do with the possibility of split-rights ownership with the Siegel estate in the next two years. Snyder's reboot is their way of trying to cash in and lockdown a franchise before they have to cut the estates a piece. I'm betting Smallville is a partial victim of the same issue. I'm guessing if the series became the basis for the movie franchise, then the estates could claim a percentage of syndication and ancillaries. It would be a kind of admission that Smallville was Superboy, but under a different name.
Well, with the Legion of Doom, what you saw was pretty much what you got. Just quick, shadowy glances of them, which is what I suspected.
Who knows, they may resurface in the finale, but I'm not holding my breath. There are enough plot threads to unravel without adding them into the mix. Lex will be back, and I'm thinking Darkseid will show up in some form or another.
I just wish they'd have left Captain Cold out of it. He's such a lame character...and I can't imagine his Costume could look anything but ridiculous on screen.
Liked the episode. It was a nice way to show/tell how Clark has to prioritize what he reacts to and what he doesn't. Also, a nice way to avoid the marriage or at least create a question about it for the finale.
I liked the way Toyman assigned all of the Legion of Doom members their arch rivals. It made sense in a wonderful Smallville way. Next week is going to be SUPER! And yes, pun intended.
