It's still ridiculous to me that that show is going to end exactly where a lot of people would've have wanted it to start. You're going to be wanting so much more and you'll never get it.
Completely right Scott; ridiculous. No one can explain that fact away. A well done TV series about Superman would trump a well-done series about Clark Kent any day. With a new Superman movie being developed Smallville will not move on to the next chapter. If they had integrated the Superman persona in at the beginning and slowly built up to flipping the series focus around they could have transitioned to a Superman TV Series when Clark's Parents were written out of the show.
I'll agree that it's done a pretty good job with the limitations that were imposed on it. It's just a shame, because I like Welling and I enjoyed the Superman mythology they played with. But I think it's going to seem like a huge "what might have been" the more time passes.
While I would have loved for there to be a season with Welling in costume, I think the no tights no flights theme is what has allowed the show to work as long as it has.
In many ways, it's made the writers work around the obvious and also tread on a lot of ground the comics, particularly modern comics, haven't covered.
While the silver-age Superboy books did show a lot of firsts, it never really showed why Clark would become a super hero. He had powers; he became a hero.
From the Byrne revamp through now, there are a few stories showing Clark/Kal-el's development into Superman, but not the whole story of how the alien child grew up to be Earth's greatest hero. Smallville's done that.
Smallville has charted Clark's growth from wanting to hide his abilities to reluctantly using them to protect his secret, to using them to protect his family and friends from the danger he attracted, to reluctantly being a hero in hiding, to — in these final episodes — growing into not only a hero but also a role model to inspire others as Superman.
The comics never fully told that story. Honestly, I would love to see an open-ended comic series that did just that.
I wouldn't go as far as saying Smallville was a great series. It even had full seasons that were clunkers. But it also told some really good stories and developed some fine characters.
Sure it strayed far afield from the various Superman continuities to develop its own, but Chloe (Alison Mack) and Lionel Luthor (Jon Glover) were very compelling original characters.
Michael Rosenbaum acted his butt off as Lex. Jon Schnieder and Annette O'Toole basically redefined Pa and Ma Kent. And Erica Durance has developed into very good TV actress. She's really shines when the show takes on a comedic tone. And Welling has grown from having to be held up by his co-stars to actually becoming pretty good.
For better or worse, the show had a take on many of Superman's major villains and put its twist on a ton of Superman and DCU lore.
Certainly it benefited from being on the WB with the network's low ratings, but a 10-year run and over 200 episodes is respectable in anyone's book. DC will be lucky to have another property to run half that long.
I completely agree with the idea no flights no tights that the show set up... the show is the story of clarks journey to being superman i am a HUGE smallville fan since season 1 and ive gotta say that if they put him in the tights to early he would have been competing with the movies and any other forms of Superman in media. the show definitely has pulled all the stops for this final season and seeing what they have done idk but i dont think they could have made a really good superman with his type of battles and villains on the show and on TV. they had to downsize it and i personally think that with that it made the show better and has made it great building up to the finale.
When i first started watching the show i never expected for him to even get where he is at now so im surprised already lol
I was freaking ecstatic seeing the legion of doom and was that non and ursa in the last episode setting it up for the movies????
Your powers on Earth may seem extraordinary, Kal-El, but we are not gods. - Jor-El (Smallville Season 5)
Looking at this picture, the characters are (clockwise) Solomon Grundy, Black Manta, Captain Cold, Roulette, not sure, and Merlin (?). I'll put my "Blur" hatred aside to watch this episode and I'm for sure watching the last episode.
Wow. I am excited for the last regular episode and finale!
I loved the booster gold episode but i watched it alone so the next week i had my kids watch with me. whoops - the zod phantom zone episode is not what i shouldda shown the kids (ages 4, 7).
I would agree that we are seeing Solomon Grundy, Black Manta, Captain Cold, Roulette, and Merlin and in the video on the table is Toyman the guy with his back to us could be anyone - metallo is a possibility

I agree, but I've hung in there & now Black Manta--Awesome!!!
I'll always be grateful to Smallville for showcasing Aquaman.

Ok so in the preview it shows someone putting on the legion ring and the hands look like karas to me! It might just be wishful thinking though because I want her to go to the future and hook up with young brainiac 5.
It does kinda look like metallo in the pic cause you can see the metal part on his chest barely.
Did anyone in a million years ever expect to see Manta in the cool helmet and Captain Cold in the parka on Smallville? The rest of the JL are showing up for the penultimate ep? It will be interesting to see their take on Soloman Grundy.
