All of that to bring Alec Holland back and possibly retcon Alan Moore's Saga of the Swamp Thing No. 21 "Anatomy Lesson."
There's a lot of meat on his bones for being dead so long.
I really don't understand why there is a demand for Swamp Thing to be a part of the DCU. While I did like Moore's take on the JLA, I never thought Swamp Thing fit in with the super heroes. The Batman team-up was great only because it was cool to see Wrightson draw Batman.
But whatever. I'm sure this will make a lot of folks happy. Heck maybe Swampy can get a suped-up pontoon boat, a teen-aged sidekick and a dog with a cape.
No...wait. Swamp Thing? Really? Or is it Alec Holland since a while back it was stated that Swampy wasn't actually the doc, but a colony of microbes that THOUGHT they were the doc. So maybe we'll se Swamp Thing vs Swamp Thing?

Yeah this is confusing....I too don't understand the "need" to get Swampy back as part of the DCU proper....Especially since they really went out of their way for years to deny him to DCU and kept him in the Vertigo universe. There was no reason he couldn't have popped up wherever as the story dictated.
I like Swamp Thing being "available" to cross-over with Superman or Batman if need be but I don't want to see him going up against Darkseid or hanging out with the Teen Titans either.
It's a shame that they are homogenizing great fringe characters like Swamp Thing and Deadman to generate interest in DC's super-hero population...

That's why i referenced Moore's Anatomy Lesson story from Saga of Swamp Thing No. 21. That's the story where it was established that Holland wasn't transformed into a swamp monster but the microbes were fooled into believing they were Holland and somehow took on his memories. It's the classic story that all but launched one of the best-written if not the best-written runs in DC's long history.
Certainly, in the panels shown it designates the rising body as Alec Holland, but the next issue caption says return of Swamp Thing?
Of course it could be a that Swampy fights White lantern Alec Holland, which is just dopey.
Anthony nailed it when he said Swamp Thing was never written out of the DCU. He just wasn't used in the other DCU titles so there is no reason for a big re-introduction.
And I agree that the no DCU crossover with Swamp Thing was unnecessary. I think it was really just a political bow to Karen Berger and the success of the Vertigo line.
Maybe this will be great. Johns has a knack for reviving characters but really Brightest Day has been one of the most hodge-podge efforts I've ever read. What I hate is that DC used up a year of work of some of its better artists for a series that's really been a waste of time.
Was there any doubt Aquaman would get a series after the huge response he and Mera got in Blackest Night?
I would have much preferred Johns and Reis on an Aquaman series the past year than Brightest Day.

And don't forget...a waste of our money. Even at "Holding the line at $2.99" it's still a pricey book that really only had one good arc (Aquaman) every couple of issues for about 6-8 pages each time. Money could have been better spent on a brand new Aqua-series from the get-go.

I never thought I'd see DC undo something Moore had done. Maybe they'll say the non-Holland Swampy is the Vertigo one, and this guy is the Wein/Wrightson Swampy or something. As long as they don't go with the Gerry Conway super hero type from the end of the original run. Pu.
This actually might fit into the first Vertigo run of Swamp Thing that concluded with Mark Millar's arc where Swamp Thing did ascend to a global/astro level. (parliament of planets IIRC?)
Although Bryan K Vaughn's run starring Tefe was hugely underrated. The most recent run (Richard Corben art aside) was fairly forgettable.
Just read the issue. It doesn't look like it contradicts anything Moore did thus far.
In fact, I think this could very well launch off Mark Millar's final issues.
Again, I haven't read those in years, but I do recall a big part of Swamp Thing ascension in Millar's run was to get rid of his humanity... to that end he even got to say goodbye to Alec Holland.
So Swamp Thing is running amuck without humanity and their only hope is Alec Holland, who rises from the grave. Although I don't recall anything about Swamp Thing burying the body of Alec Holland in Star City... but then again I haven't been following Green Arrow and whatever tie in this mystical forrest has to the parliament of trees.
I also like the tie in with the Fire Elemental stuff on Ostrander's Firestorm run.
Wasn't there an Aquaman writer who wanted to reinvent Aquaman as a water elemental, but was stopped by editorial? I want to say Peter David, but I can't find any references to it.
