The comics community vs Rob Granito

Been following this story develop mostly because I ran into this guy last weekend, at the time I just assumed he was a local fan artist recreating other people's work but it's so much more than that, he's apparently a man who passes himself off as a pro but so far, none of his employers have heard of him.

Who On Earth Is Rob Granito? (UPDATE) Bleeding Cool Comic Book, Movies and TV News and Rumors

some of the artists who've had their work swiped react the best way they can to Granito:

This guy sounds like he may have a screw loose or something. I'm not sure how anybody who's completely in their right mind would keep going at this point.

The comic community will barely tolerate a LEGITIMATE swipe artist with real work under his belt. Rich Buckler has certainly fallen out of favor in the community over the years, as tales of his swiping have become more and more known.

I do know that comic cons will pretty much let anyone get in as a "pro". I went to my first comic covention as a pro with no actual work published. I'd drawn it, but the company I was working for probably spent the money to print it on getting a booth that year.

very interesting to say the least, I bet he goes to the small conventions as an legit DC person. feel bad for the fans expecting actual comic art.

I've been following this story via the Pittsburgh Comicon mailing list. Apparently he got a table there one year, because it was last-minute and the organizers were too busy to check his "resume." His name came up in other communities, and once one of the Pittsburgh folks had a chance to review this guy's so-called "artwork," they ended up refusing to let him back as a vendor. Someone from that group posted that there was a confrontation which may have been filmed. I'm hoping a link will surface.

Ok, it's up in the air whether anyone filmed this or not, but here is Ethan Van Sciver's account of his conversation with Granito. When Ethan Van Sciver Met Rob Granito Bleeding Cool Comic Book, Movies and TV News and Rumors

Some of the stuff Granito copied was pretty weak to begin with, IMO. If he's got the chops to fake some of that stuff, he should be good enough to pull off decent originals and should man up as they say. I'm just baffled at some of the choices he made as far as what would be good swiping material.

What absolute garbage......his portfolio sucks culo! Horrible artist who swipes doesn't even give credit to the artist he's taking from. He works as a pro?? Yeaaaaaaah ok this guy needs to layoff the crack pipe.

I don't know what's sadder his sorry *** or the idiots who look at his work and can't tell that it's caca and buy it.........

I love how this TOAD tries to pass off a Pic of Bowie from Labyrinth as a painting just because he diddle with it on a computer....... freeking talentless hack.

I like that on his website, he claims that he did some recent work on Calvin and Hobbes.

He can't draw well at all on his own. It's easy to trace and mimic what has already been done, but it's another thing all together to draw it yourself.

He is always at the Chiller Theater show in NJ and I'm curious to see if he shows up this year. He's scheduled so far...
