Holiday Killer in the next Batman movie?

When news broke last month that Joseph Gordon-Levitt was likely joining Christopher Nolan's 'The Dark Knight Rises,' comic geeks and Internet movie bloggers dashed off to their own personal Batcave to try and figure out just who the actor might play. Speculation was rampant and covered a variety of characters from Batman's infamous rogue's gallery, including The Riddler and Deadshot. Those two bits of speculation didn't pan out, but one other popular choice appears to be correct.

Variety says JGL is set to play Alberto Falcone, better known as The Holiday Killer. If you're scratching your head wondering "who the hell is Alberto Falcone?" you're probably not a big comic fan. Allow us to get you up to speed.

Alberto is the son of mafia kingpin Carmine Falcone (played by Tom Wilkinson in 'Batman Begins'). Unlike his siblings, Alberto wasn't allowed to become involved in the family's business – so he went to Harvard and Oxford instead. However, the crime gene couldn't stay buried forever, and when some of Gotham's most notorious criminals started getting murdered in the graphic novel 'The Long Halloween,' it's Alberto – dubbed The Holiday Killer – who's behind the crimes. He eventually winds up in Arkham Asylum. He reappeared in the 'Dark Victory' story arc.

As Variety points out, including a character like The Holiday Killer makes a lot of sense given Nolan's intentions to keep his Gotham City grounded in reality. While it would have been fascinating to see the filmmaker's take on The Riddler, this role suits Gordon-Levitt nicely. He even bears a bit of a resemblance to Alberto Falcone.

Nolan hasn't given us any indication as to what might happen in the script, which will most likely be his final 'Batman' outing, but we do know that Gordon-Levitt will be joining fellow 'Inception' thespian Tom Hardy (set to play Bane) and Anne Hathaway (Selina Kyle/Catwoman). Batman looks like he could have his hands full this time out. In the hands of a lesser director, we might worry that Nolan was adding too many villains to the mix, but given his track record with the previous 'Batman' films, we're trusting him completely on this one.

Turns out that isn't the only casting buzz surrounding the project, either. Apparently Juno Temple, fresh off her critically-acclaimed performance in Elgin James' 'Little Birds,' is also being considered for a part. No details on who the young starlet might play, but the description being tossed around is "a street-smart Gotham girl." Sounds like a smaller supporting role, but Nolan may surprise us.

Warner Bros., as is standard procedure, has refused to respond to the rumors. What do you guys think? Is Alberto Falcone too obscure to get excited about or do you think Nolan can make him appealing to an audience who isn't familiar with the character? Chime in below, and check out 'The Long Halloween' if you want to get familiar with The Holiday Killer prior to 'The Dark Knight Rises' July 20th, 2012 release date.

Kind of makes sense. They'll be able to work in a revenge angle to boot.

I hate to admit I've only read "The Long Halloween" once. I really have a hard time with Tim Sale's art style. Odd that "The Holiday Killer" is pretty much an updated Calendar Man, long considered one of Batman's lamer foes.

But Nolan can make it work!

I'm in total agreement with this statement :

"Batman looks like he could have his hands full this time out. In the hands of a lesser director, we might worry that Nolan was adding too many villains to the mix, but given his track record with the previous 'Batman' films, we're trusting him completely on this one."

Nolan used Scarecrow, Joker and Two Face in Dark Knight and also provided character arcs for batman, Rachel, Bruce Wayne and Lucious Fox. Alfred didn't have an arc really but he did have a couple of great scenes.

Nolan's made a very good and a great super hero movie so he's got the benefit of my doubt. If someone else were attempting to meld Bane, Holiday and Catwoman into one coherent film, I wouldn't have the same confidence.

Don't forget Jim Gordon and his family given their moment as well. I have faith in Nolan to make use of such a high caliber cast.

Apparently Juno Temple, fresh off her critically-acclaimed performance in Elgin James' 'Little Birds,' is also being considered for a part. No details on who the young starlet might play, but the description being tossed around is "a street-smart Gotham girl."
Most fans are speculating Holly from Batman Year 1.

She was killed off in Action Comics Weekly, but in recent years brought back during Ed Brubaker and Darwyn Cooke's Catwoman relaunch, ultimately became the One Year Later Catwoman.

Samurainoir, you're right about Gordon. Should have mentioned him. I believe you've nailed the Street-smart Gotham Girl.

The only aspect of Year One I wasn't thrilled with was Selena being a hooker.

Some bloggers were guessing a female Robin, but Nolan's on record about no Robin in his batman films — although it would be cool if whoever follows up Nolan's Batman trilogy started with a proper origin of a teen-age Robin, I'd be happy. Didn't care for Robin in Batman Forever. Grayson's parents might have to be Circ de Soleil performers in a modern update. lol.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is probably my favorite young actor today.

I had previously predicted that he was going to play the Joker...but Nolan said that character is retired forever in his Batman movies due to Heath Ledger's death...and I can respect that.

But Nolan still saw the potential in Levitt (after working together in Inception)...and it doesn't hurt that Levitt resembles Ledger...so it's like an indirect homage...

                Levitt already looks the part...lol...

                I dig it...hopefully it's a done deal...

I think many at DC internally weren't too happy by that either... I think they were pretty quick to come out with a mini or special to explain it away as her hiding out from the mob or going undercover or something like that.

One way or another, it will be really interesting to see which way Nolan goes with Anne Hathaway. As fond as I am of the socialite Selena Kyle from nostalgic periods, there might be much more drama to be had contrasting billionaire Bruce Wayne with a street level Selena. Nolan's first movie did point out how disturbing it was for a billionaire to go out and beat up poor people at night.

Batman was beating up poor people? All I saw him beating up were gangsters, homicidal freaks and ninjas.

Ledgers' Joker, and how he was portrayed, was a rare high point
for me in the two Nolan Batfilms... I can't see anything
but a letdown for me as this third one opens... shame Nolan won't replace
Ledger... I'm already hoping for a reboot... but even IF and WHEN it
happens... and IF and WHEN The Joker is used again, I'm guessing
it'll be a LONG way off.

It'll be interesting to see where Warners goes after Nolan is done, will they put Bats out to pasture for a bit, or go right back at it with a different direction and new franchise?

Well Hec, you might still be right about Joseph Gordon-Levitt playing the Joker. The rumor that Levitt is playing Alberto Falcone has been de-bunked.
