    Favorite Cliche Comic Cover

I started thinking about this when I saw this month's Avengers cover. Its the classic villian-standing-over-the-sprawled-hero-bodies cover. I thought about how many comics I've seen with this type of shot, but my favorite is probably the team vs team shot. You know the one where each side of the cover has one team rushing towards the other. Like Avengers #141-

What is your favorite? Not specifically (like Avengers 141), but what cliche- the hero in a gun sight, unconscious hero with the floating heads looking down, the gravestone with the hero's name (particularly popular with Batman).

How 'bout the one where a hero is holding a dead hero while other heroes look on....This one's been done to death (pun intended)....You know, ala Crisis #7 or X-Men #136:

The Xmen was the first, so its the winner. Did Perez even credit Byrne?

Actually it's not....I think there were other similar covers before X-Men #136...I think I have a Wizard magazine 2-page spread where they showed them all...I'll have to dig it out....

Wasn't it Julius Schwartz that always said comics sold better with gorillas on the cover?

Oh yeah the mother of all lifted covers.. but i can't find the original silver age comic that the idea is lifted from

I know Batman 156 does the cover and Thor 127 also has the same cover but i remember the original source I think had a spaceman on the cover.....

Don't know if it was the first, but off the top of my head I remember JLA #91 from 1971.

Edited to add: I could think of some earlier covers...Supes holding a "dead" Lois Lane, Batman holding a "dead" Robin, but as the criteria includes "while other heroes look on", this is the earliest I could think of and I think it was several years before Uncanny X-Men #136.

To be honest, I never would have thought of that cover until you mentioned it and I wouldn't have even known about it except I was on a Ditko research kick a few months ago.
