Will Mr Curry care for the hook or symbiotic water hand?

I think Aquaman should his hand cut off in every issue he's featured in from now on. It will be back the following issue with no explanation, only to get cut off once again. It can be like the South Park Kenny gag in the DCU.

Just to mix things up, how about he gets a prosthetic shaped like his trident?

The rumblings on the Aquaman shrine are that Aquaman is going to have new starfish-like regenerative powers.

Honestly, if he doesn't get his hand back, it's just a stupid retread.

All that effort to go back to classic Aquaman will have been wasted.

what if the hand grows another rest of Aquaman, too?

I hope Geoff Johns is throwing us a curveball....It almost HAS to be...It's too obvious otherwise to cut his hand off again and throw a hook on the end.

Oh....And they're really making an effort to make Aquaman COOL again and erase all of the crap from the last 17 years or so....KUDOS!

Just read issue twenty. Looks like the Hawks death last issue was a fake out as well since the same thing happened to Aquaman.

I really enjoyed this issue as set up for the ongoing. Hopefully it will be Geoff Johns writing it (although I guess Peter Tomasi might also be up for that).

I it's kind of fun that they have turned this Aquawar into one big Jerry Springer. Basically that's essentially his Brother in Law cutting off his hand, and his nephew is the new Aqualad. Kind of ups the conflict into an ever more personal and familial territory by tying everyone together via this (new?) character of Mera's sister.

Nice to see them doing something with the new Aquagirl as well. I like her costume, even though I don't know too much about her other than her Teen Titans appearances.

That's the word about the new powers on Aquaman. I think the Brightest Day writers just wanted to go for a shock value and get people wondering if Aquaman was going back to the hook or the water hand.
Funny that it is on the other hand this time but I am pretty sure the starfish thing is correct. If not, there are going to be a lot of Aquaman fans ticked off.
They just got him back after the resurrection thing and then this happens. The writers wouldn't be that sick.

That's the way I felt when I saw this. My feeling was 'if they're going to take all this potential that they've built up and squander it so they can just go back to the bearded, bare-chested, hook-handed Namor wanna-be, then I would just as soon the kill him off and let him stay dead rather than continue to screw him up.'

However, on the retrospective feature on the 60's cartoon DVD, Mark Waid says that when they gave Aquaman the hook and so forth, sales of the book shot up. Initially, I doubted this, but if you look at how long that series ran, it's second only to the 60's series. Sales must have been reasonably good to keep it going that long.

I can't stand that run. Not only do I hate the changes that make the charactor almost unrecognizable, but the artwork is horrible. But I wonder if those of us who love the classic orange and green, no-hook Aquaman are in the minority?

Right. When it happened I was really ticked off and angry that they turned Aquaman into a bearded freak with a hook hand but after awhile it finally got under my skin where I accepted the fate that was given to the classic character.
DC was going through a lot of changes during that time where they were toughening up their characters and I just figured this was there way of making Aquaman a more acceptable and modern version.
When he appeared on the Justice League cartoon I thought that this pretty much sealed his fate with this appearance. So, I being the Mego customizer decided to create a Aquaman/hook hand version.

Then some writer got behind the wheel and totally undid all of Peter David's hook hand recreation and gave Aquaman...guess what? With his new found ability to control water....he gets a water hand. What the heck????
That to me was really, really stupid. Then of course we had all this sword of Aquaman garbage and then his death and his so called resurrection.

I think the problem with Aquaman is the writers. You can't keep good writers on Aquaman for too long. You get someone like Peter David who comes aboard and takes over and recreates Aquaman into an angry bad ***. Then Peter David leaves and someone else comes in and tries to keep up appearances and eventually changes Aquaman into a giant fish stick with a water hand?

I really cannot see for the life of me what is going to happen to Aquaman now. The ball is really in the writers court once again. I am sure DC has to approve it but I really can't see them going back to the original Peter David idea and chopping off his hand (note it is not his left hand this time, it is his right hand).

Somebody above made a humorous comment about having Aquaman turn up in each issue and have his hand cut off sort of like a tongue and cheek tribute joke to Kenny from South Park. DC might as well go and do it. They've done everything unmentionable and cruel to the great king of the seas. Why not make him a total *** clown now?

Just leave Aquaman alone! He's been through enough!!!!

Peter David's take was fine, but it wasn't really Aquaman. David is one of those writers who likes to come on a book and totally overhaul it to his whims. He does good work, but I really dislike that approach as a rule. He did the same thing to Supergirl, and even the Hulk really, although he built on story seeds that Bill Mantlo and others had planted.

There were a lot of strange directions that took of in the 90s and sold lots of books. GL sales picked up when Hal went nuts and Kyle took over. But now it's looked at as one of DC's biggest blunders.

Johns seems to have been on a mission to finally dispel all the "Aquaman is Lame" jokes, and return Aquaman to a modified version of the classic style, like he did with Green Lantern. So I hope this is just a shock value cliffhanger meant to make him more cool, and make the misfires of the past seem even moreso.

                        Absolutely! How annoying.

Ross neatly established Arthur's regenerative power--I'd like to see it become canonical.

Yes, all of the recent Aquaman vs. Black Manta stuff is from Brightest Day...the best thing about the entire mini-series and really the only thing worth reading in those issues IMO...

they just don't know what to do with some these characters, Aquaman is a perfect example. with every series they had in the 90's they kept losing direction, canceling it and then restarting with a new number 1, each series worse than the last. I gave up by the mid nineties but it is cool to see the classic look back and I hope they do make the character cool again. Would love to see him get some respect and maybe a movie. I always liked Aquaman and his wife is a babe
