I've been reading Back Issue #38 covering John Byrne run on Fantastic Four (on my ipad! Two Morrows gives you a digital copy along with your print subscription... Awesome!).


Loving this issue so far. One of my favourite volume of Back Issues of all the ones I've been reading lately.

I love the cover of Back Issue with Thing and the kid at the lunch counter and that you included the Rockwell painting and the photo for comparison. (Did the photo inspire the painting or was it a reference....or is the photo based on the painting?) ...(Edited: Never mind. I also like the drawing of Thing with a cigar. That really makes me think of Kirby.

I never liked Byrne's rendition of the Thing that much, Jack Kirby and John Buscema were the masters to me when it came to Mr Grimm.

Kirby and Buscema were the best, with Joe Sinnott inks on either!!

Byrne's thing is good, but Kirby's finalized Thing design is best. I think later guys like Buscema and Perez "prettied" him up a bit, made him a bit more heroic looking, less pathos in his eyes. Somehow, Kirby managed to convey that every time he drew him.
