Hmmmm....
You guys are scaring me. Your suggestions seem way too plausible. (But my Black Lantern Super-Hip was funnier.... I'm gonna keep telling myself....)
I've been kinda nervous about stuff like this. Archie's been dabbling with the sort of overhyped non-event that's choking Marvel and DC as of late. I find it hard to believe they'd actually kill off Grundy (considering how close Wetherbee must be to a heart attack....) since it'd mean a significant chunk of old stuff couldn't be reprinted any more. (And Archie relies HEAVILY on reprints.)

>I like to think of the Archie-verse as the one place where event-drama doesn't rule the day.
Or at least one where the hype doesn't outstrip the event. They've had PLENTY of events over the years, but they all sort of happen, and then get folded into the Archie cannon naturally. Archie's new car, Jughead's girlfriend, the Punisher coming to Riverdale, Betty's older sister graduating and moving away, Pepper leaving.... okay; the last one was never explained, but the rest were. And it was just accepted that they happened, and the readers didn't freak out in fits of nerdly wrath if a story from fifty years ago was different from a newer one, or had characters who've since disappeared, or if Sabrina used to actually be evil.... It's when you FOCUS on these things there's a problem, since you set up an unrealistic expectation of continuity in the readers. Next thing you know; Brian's "Crisis of Infinite Archies" as an attempt to sort it all out.... but then the NEW writer wants to bring back Lottie Little, which screws up the new continuity and forces them to do Countdown to Infinite Archies" to fix it five years later.... and Moose punches out reality.... and.... well; needless to say, you end up with a weird sort of mush in the minds of the fans, who normally would have just accepted things the way they are. ('Cos we all know it only takes one clown in management to suggest a hip, gritty reboot....)

Most of this stuff is taking place in the realm of Imaginary Stories (aren't they all?), with the continuing twin storylines of "What if Archie Marries Veronica?" and "What if Archie Marries Betty?" allowing them to do all this stuff in the manner of the fifties Mort Weisinger Superman tales. Thus we have Reggie hooking up with Betty *gasp*, but not really, because it's not in the official "continuity"... it's in the What If future.
Between the old guard at Archie finally passing the torch and their new hollywood agents/publicity management, this is why we get slow news day generated headlines every few months with Archie in recent years.
We've discussed this before, but I think it's a true-ism that the audience for Archie is still turning over every five years or so, which makes the continuity as fluid as it was before Superhero fandom evolved to the point it was today.
What I'm interested in seeing is how the new Magazine format "Teen Beat" style Archie does in the incredibly shrinking magazine marketplace. If the imaginary "Marries Betty/Vernoica" publicity is able to launch a comics oriented magazine successfully in this day and age, where Vampirella, Too Much Coffee Man, Kiss, Ultimate Marvel etc. have failed.Comment

That's what kinda bothers me though; that they feel the need to ascribe an official alternate/imaginary/Earth Archie 213 byline to their comics. It starts creeping into the things that superhero books did that eventually led to the stuff we get now.
