I once read that that's because the movie was Dr. Strange until the production company and Marvel had some issue over the rights. The producers had already started work and said "screw it" and made a few small changes to the script (scratch-out "Strange" and pencil-in "Mordrid") and pressed on.

Yeah Dr. Mordrid rocked. Jeffery Combs is awesome anyway.

I remember when the Disney movies really resurged in the 90s, there was always a "me-to" Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, Hunchback, etc. out to capitalize on the real thing. And they were usually distributed by Good Times video.
