Agreed...he comes in third place behind Flash Gordon and The Phantom as far as recognizability for the old King Features characters IMO. I don't see this doing well at all.

I guess Seeing that he is Young looking maybe they're taking it in a whole new Direction?.....I liked Mandrake in the Animated Tv show Defenders of The Earth with The Phantom,Flash gordon and Lothar

A friend of mine was working on a cool new take on Mandrake, and was crushed to hear about this film. As part of her research, she discovered Mandrake (and Narda) were based on real people, and Canucks no less...

Given the recent popularity of "Magician" films like The Illusionist and The Prestige, I'm not suprised that this one was greenlit.

Is the Mandrake comic strip even still running? I don't recall seeing it run in any of my local papers in my lifetime.

Come to think of it, is The Phantom and Flash Gorden even still running?

I think the Phantom is still being published...or maybe that's just in Australia? Isn't he big over there (or down under there)?

Hmmmm....

I think nowadays the studoi's are milking EVERYTHING for ideas. So ANYTHING with a recognizable name, no matter how dated, irrelevant or past expiration.

Not that I'm critiquing Mandrake, but it's one of them vaguely recognized franchaises that an exec remembers 'cos he read it once when he was 7, and it's comparatively cheap.
