Yeah. My gripe has been that it's often used as a crutch; so you get the same shots, same scenes, same action over and over with just the skins changed.
Good special effects of any kind are the ones you don't notice as effects. Example: Ursa blowing the Helicopter into a Barn in Supes II .
I did like the CGI matte painting for Enterprise and Stargate. That was just to extend sets.
CHARACTERS done in cgi? Got into an argumnet with Joe Dante at a Wonderfest once. He told me he was looking into more Hanna Barbera properties. Eventually I said " How can you call it live action when the main character is a CGI cartoon?" Theres things a real animal can't do. He said. " Then you shoot around it, use cutaways, camera tricks." It went down hill from there.
Ahh heck, just color me Jack Pierce.
Still cant believe they did Hulk TWICE . And made the same mistake , twice.
When I saw Avatar I thought: Those poor dumb actors, theyre next. ( ever seen Looker? )
A special effect when done right is a great trick. Done badly you feel like someone lying to your face.
Yesterday before Harry Potter, they showed the trailer for Tron Legacy and I was blown away by the CGI "young Jeff Bridges". Perhaps it works better because it is a movie about computers and everything is supposed to look a little CGI. I dunno. But it was pretty darn amazing.
CGI is a tool. It doesn't fix bad plots or wooden acting. But when used properly, it allows moviemakers to tell great stories.
BTW I always preferred Kirk Allen's cartoon flying sequences to the comical "man on a board" George Reeves flying sequences anyway...lol.
Get out of here......Alyn's Cartoon Superman flying was dumb especially after Republic studios Captain Marvel did some incredible flying scenes for it's time a few years earlier. Columbia pictures were really cheap and didn't want to do real flying scenes. So they just animated it.
George's man on Board was also pretty good for it's time. George wanted no part of wires after he fell when of of the wires snapped on one of his takeoffs.
Plus what kid pre-Chris Reeve didn't do George's famous Bounce all over the house........
