I'm not talking about obvious crossovers like Avengers/JLA or Superman Vs. Spiderman, I mean within the course of storytelling you see DC referring to a "spiderguy" or perhaps J. Jonah Jameson talking about a fictional character like "Batman."
I'm not nearly as verse in comic lore as many of you here, so I was a bit surprised reading an old Treasury book last night. I was reading a Batman story in 'The Best of DC, Vol I' (1977) called "Night of the Reaper." In the story, Dick Grayson and some college buddies are checking out a local Halloween parade float with a Super Heroes theme. The front and back of the float show the usual DC suspects- Bats, Supes, Aquaman, etc. But in the middle of float is a character with a star on his chest, a ring of vertical stripes around his mid-section and shield with cocentric circles and a big star. Next to him is someone clearly dressed like Havok and you can just make out a green chest with white lightning bolt that I assume is Quicksilver.
Later there are panels in a party with someone definitely dressed as Thor and another person explaining his costume as that of "Webslinger Lad."
Maybe this happens more than I realized, but I found it a funny nod by DC.
(BTW, does anyone know when that Batman story originally appeared?)
