    Shedding a little light on the Steve Johnson Superman suit...

    Before you all go bashing Tim Burton, let me explain what you're looking at in the "Burton Superman" thread;

    Firstly, I worked for Steve Johnson on "The Abyss". Of all the special FX companies I've worked for, including Stan Winston's, Rick Baker's and Rob Bottin's, I can honestly say with all confidence, that Steve is not only the least talented, but personally, the biggest moron out of the bunch. He wasn't impressive in the least and did nothing but contribute BAD ideas to GOOD directors. Cameron included... Jim hated him. Let me repeat that; Jim HATED him.

    That monstrosity of a Superman costume you're looking at in the other thread, was HIS idea. NOT Burton's. I actually have a copy of a 1:3 scale maquette that Burton had sculpted for this film, after Johnson was fired. I also own several pieces of original production art from that unmade film, and it all looks NOTHING like those photos.

    Tim Burton is a genius. Plain and simple. Is he the right guy for Superman? In my opinion, no, but neither was Bryan Singer. Special FX guys and costume designers sometimes do this kind of work on spec, to try to get the job. This was Johnson's attempt at Superman, and just like his career ended up being, it was a miserable failure.

    Don't believe everything you read.

    I believe you Sandy. I am fan of Burton, but mostly his original stuff. Beetlejuice, Nightmare Before Christmas, Corpse Bride, and Big Fish are some of my favorite films of all time. I know Big Fish was a book first but I haven't read it. I just not a huge fan of his "reimaginations." But I know he is extremely talented. I am looking forward to his stop motion Addams Family too.

      I am a fan of Burtons work too, just don't think he would be the right guy to direct a movie about "the man of tomorrow". I even liked his reimagining of POTA. not as good as the originals but good in it's own right as a stand alone movie.

      thanks for the insider insight though.

        But it WAS Burton's Idea to pick Nick Cage as Superman...and that's just plain old bad casting! Not to mention Micheal Keating as Batman!

        Face it...casting is NOT his strong suit. All he does is use Johnny Depp over, and over again.

          I know some guys in the industry and yeah, they share your view of Johnson.

          As for Burton, give him a project he wants to do and he's magic but I always see a little contempt with things thrust upon him like POTA.

          A lot of directors utilize the same actors over and over.

            Sandy, you hang out with Rob Bottin!?!?! I saw him on the bonus materials on Carpenter's The THING and he is a hoot! He is freakin' hilarous! Is he a totally Los Angeles/Hollywood type person or what? That guy is off the hook man!

              Michael Keaton wasn't terrible as batman but his Bruce Wayne was weak

                  I hate the suit for its intended application, but I think it's pretty neat overall.

                    Absolutely brilliant as Beetlejuice though.

                    I think his true gifts were as a comedic actor and it's a darn shame that he seemed to trade that in for mostly forgettable dramatic work post-Batman, with the exception of his scene stealing turn in Much Ado about Nothing.

                      ^I get the impression Keaton made a ton of cash as Batman, and has wisely stowed it away. He seems to only work when he wants to. Good place to be.
