I'm not a HUGE Hamm supporter, I don't watch Mad Men, so I don't really know his work well. But just looking at him, he has the look of that older Swan Superman. I'm still hoping for Welling, but I doubt it will happen. WB isn't much on cross-product synergy.
I wouldn't mind Routh back at all, but I doubt that will happen too. I think Snyder is just playing lip service to his fans. Routh is unfortunately connected to the prior reboot that under-performed. I doubt WB would get behind him in another attempt at a franchise revival.
I just hope we don't get the round of Ashton Kutcher, Keanu, blah-blah. I'm sure we will, but man, I'm tired of that junk.
The most important thing for a Superman actor is his ability to convey Clark Kent. Given his role in 30 Rock, I think he has that one down in terms of the underlying comedy and creating a sympathetic character amidst the bumbling.
Although I guess the question is whether or not they will go that way again or try for a more relatable Yuppie Clark in the vein of the Byrne and post Crisis years.
Pre Crisis there was no doubt that Clark was the disguise, but post Crisis I think Byrne made it quite clear the Clark was closer to the "real" personality where he could relax and continue to be the human that he was raised as since "birth" from the pod.
I have been hoping Jon Hamm gets the role for a long time now. He is a great actor with tremendous range. But regardless of who they go with, I like the idea of an older Superman. There has always been something mature and fatherly at the core of the character. I don't think a younger actor could do the role justice.

Yeah.... he's SuperMAN; not Supertween, or Superyouth, or Superprettyboy.... He's also supposed to have presence.

I think that's one place where Christopher Reeve's talent really comes through -- the presence and gravity mixed with warmth and easygoingness come together amazingly for a guy who was -- what, 24? 25? when the project got going. He's more avuncular than paternal, I'll give that, but I grew up on re-runs for Uncle George like a lot of other people, but Reeve really reonated for me as a kid and still, now.
What I really like about the Photoshop job of Hamm that I linked to is the Curt Swan quality of his face and hair -- he really looks like the Silver/Bronze Age Man of Steel.
Ah, but here's a question to how Hollywood thinks. Even if Supes/Clark is an older character, would they then let Lois be close in age or would they still insist on casting a 20 something Lois? To me, Lois shouldn't look like she just walked out of high school. I don't know enough about Hamm to make a judgment and I know those photoshop images obviously come from a different source, but he doesn't look warm and inviting to me.
