I don't know enough to know who's underrated or not. Definitely have my opinions about who's overrated, though.

That said, I'm surprised to read from a couple of posters here that Jerry Ordway is underrated, so that being the case....

I loved his work on All-Star Squadron and if he doesn't get enough credit as an artist, I think it's a shame. His run on that title was tops in my book.

Ordway's "Power of Shazam" was a great run as well and a milestone for the Marvel Family IMO...Sadly DC has squandered all of the groundwork he built and has gone in oddball directions with the Marvels....

Ordway get's a lot of credit for his inking...but never really got accolades for his work on said books. IMHO he's tied with Terry Austin as THE inker that should ink John Byrne. Unfortunately Byrne has such an ego that he thinks he can ink his own work...which sucks when he inks himself. There's no definition at all in his art when he tries to ink himself.

One day I will purchase a All-Star or Infinity page by Ordway.
"When not too many people can see we're all the same
And because of all their tears,
Their eyes can't hope to see
        The beauty that surrounds them
        Isn't it a pity".

That whole "big black magic marker" phase was horrible!

            Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez.
Just as good as Neal Adams and Dick Giordano in my opinion but never reached the popularity he deserves.

^ True, but his version of the DCU is the version most folks associate with the "comic book" look of the past 30 years, due to his work on DC's style guides (much of which was inked by Dick Giordano).

It's a shame he hasn't done much interior work, given his long career.

To my memory the only title JLGL had a decent run on was DC Comics Presents....but even that I don't think was each and every month. That's probably one of the reasons most people forget about the guy until you mention he did the bulk of the artwork for the DC Style Guides for umpteenth years and then they go "Oh, yeah! I love that guy's work!"

He did a short run on NTT after Perez left, and did some Superman in the late 70s, but that's about it, despite DCCP. I think at one time DC saw him as the heir-apparent to Curt Swan, but he just couldn't churn out the work quick enough. He's better on special projects and short runs. More's the shame!

I think he was replaced on NTT and Atari Force by Eduardo Barretto...whose work was sub-par IMO....quite the let-down after JLGL....

When I think underrated, I think most of the artists working for the big two do get recognition even if they aren't "superstars", but there are indie people who consistently put out great work on a regular basis that should have much more buzz.

Terry Moore and Charlie Adlard come to mind. Moore's constantly challenging himself in the concluded Strangers in Paradise and not Echo. Adlard has been doing great moody stuff for years (X-Files and Mars Attacks comes to mind), but seems to have finally found his niche in Walking Dead.

I liked Gordon Purcell, the artist who did a lot of the Star Trek Comics in the 90s. Very realistic, kind of Norman Rockwell style.

I too loved the way Jerry Ordway treated and developed the Marvel Family and am sad that is gone now.
                            It's all good!

I really loved Mike Grell's work on Legion and GL/GA back in the day and of course Sable. Grell is kind of a cross between Curt Swan and Gil Kane, to me.

I also like Tom Mandrake's work on the SPectre, a very underrated series in my opinion.

I think Steve Rude gets overlooked a lot his Nexus and other work over the years is stellar but most people forget him until they see his work and then they say oh yeah that guy.....
