    Big Apple Comic Con...

Just a little report on the Big Apple Comic Con (Wizard World now runs the show) ....Not really much to report. Overcharging on ticket prices, tickets were supposed to be $30 but when you went to pay for tickets at the door there was a $5 surcharge which was never explained. I figured out what the surcharge was most likely for...the FREE!!! Wizard magazine they gave you after you paid for your ticket. What a joke. Anyway, I think what's becoming more and more typical of the NEW comicons is that there is nothing to speak of in Vintage toys...hell, there isn't much to speak of in vintage anything anymore at these shows. About 1/3 of the floor had CGC crap...and 1/3 was ridiculously overpriced...and the last third was half off Hardcovers and Trades...which I didn't mind so much. Picked up these bad boys for $10 each...still sealed:

But I think what the most disrepectful thing that was done was that the so called "Artist Alley" was in the basement of the Penn Plaza. That is not how you treat artists at a COMIC BOOK SHOW!!! This is the problem with I'd say 90 % of the shows...they treat the damn actors and TV guests better than they treat the artists and creators that made it possible for a COMIC BOOK SHOW/CON!!!! Wizard gets a big fat F for that. I hate to think that they do this at all of there so called Wizard World shows. Just sad and pathetic.

This show was supposed to be better than the NYCC show next week...at least I know what to expect from that show...I expect nothing from that show for a Comic Book fan that wants to buy comic books and talk to the artists and writers.

This show was supposed to be a good one because of the likes of having people like Murphy Anderson, Who one of the Wizrard guys told me was "Lost" by the handler who was supposed to pick him up A throw back to the old comic cons...but they basically blew it.

And can all the newer collectors from like the last 20 years already get over Rob Liefeld already...the guy can't draw to save his own life and yet there were lines outside the door and up the steps...give it a rest.

Anyway, the only silver lining to this show was that I started my Sketch Book at this show. I've been going to shows since the mid 80's and had never ever thought of getting a sketch done by an artist until this show...here's my page 1 of my Sketchbook...Enjoy:

    Big Apple Comic Con

I agree with you, this con was a disappointment. The line was not handled correctly, I got there early was waiting on the regular line, until I was told I had to go around the corner to get a wrist band,I had brought my ticket in advance, part was not organised correctly.

I was not going to go to this con untill Lee Majors was annonced, this was another disappointment cause when I got to him I found out he was charging $60 for his autograph, I find that price a bit steep, esp when factored in with the price of admissions. this was made even funnier when I read his quoate on the free card ad for the upcoming 6 million dallar man dvd release, here he said something like he is pleased to be bring this show to fans and a new generation of fans. i can pay $40 with sacrifice but anything more is to much, and may tend to alienate real fans, and by this I mean the real fans, not the scalpers who buy them for that price, or have the autograph but on a toy then run home to ebay it for 200 dollars or more.

Things at the con were overpriced, with a few exceptions, the co owner had a nice dollar section, with thousands and i do mean thousands of old and new comics priced for a dollar, thanks for thinking about us ordinary people who cant afford 20 dollars for an older book.

I wonder, why did they go back to the old location for the con? I liked the new location better, the pier offered more spack to move around in and more items.

I look forward to NYC CON on fri. I hope it is better.

Any one else went to this con? if so I would like to hear your thoughts on it.

BTW, no vintage Megos except for one dealer who has been doing the show for years. He's been at the show with the SAME stuff for years...looks like the same stuff that he had when I last did the show back in '02/'03...He had a naked RC Batman which I HAD to ask how much he was. Now this guy's prices have been in another stratosphere since I could remember...Hence the reason why he still has the SAME stuff since almost 10 years ago...So I ask "How much for the naked figure?" ...He says with a straight face $100. Which he then proceeds to explain that it's a RC Batman. I gave him the figure and then walked away. I mean C'mon...Seriously??!!?? I could see asking $25-$30 for the head with the body...but $100??!!?? Like I said, he'll have the same stuff at the next show. If I could afford the tables at this show I'd do it in a heartbeat....but it's just not plausible. I'd be stunned if this guy is gonna be at the Javits Show next week. Just thought I'd give everyone a laugh with this tale.

I was talking to one of the dealers at the show and he told me that, since Wizard World took over, they are allowing less dealers on the floor and charging more for tables. I did really feel like there were a lot fewer this time. That resulted in so many few deals to be had (IMHO).

I would agree that vintage toys were almost non-existent here. There tons of of toys from the last decade which will be vintage soon enough. Even the Mattel Retro Heroes I saw were $30. Heck, you can walk 10 blocks north and get them for less at Toys R Us.

BTW, I went Sunday because Saturday I drove down to Zoloween. There was a real range of toys with pretty fair prices. It was mostly other collectors with tables. Good stuff and some good conversations!

This is one of the reasons I stopped going to these shows. These dealers are damn stubborn! Their in it for the long haul and always trot out the same junk-always overpriced. They will hold these items till their ready to go to the grave before reducing the prices.
