Jumping-On Point For Blackest Knight/Brightest Day?

We've been getting the collected books of Darkest Knight in here at work and I've flipped through a couple of them. Coupled with the positive hype I've been hearing I'm getting interested in reading these.

Thing is, with only a handfull of expections, I really haven't read current comics in quite a while. I'd like to read these and understand what's going on but not have to read 5+ years worth of giant crossovers.

Well, first of all, I don't know what order to read the Darkest Knight stuff with tie-ins to Green Lantern, GLC, etc.

I'm assuming I should read the Sinestro Corp. stuff, but again I could use some help on what order to read the trades in.

I'm guessing that a lot the charactors that are coming back got bumped off during 52 Weeks/Final Crisis. Do I really have to read all that stuff to understand Darkest Knight?

And how critical is it to have read Green Lanten:Rebirth? I'm not opposed to reading it, it just seems like my reading plate is just getting fuller and fuller with this stuff.

    Suggestions please, thanks!

There are others here who are more expert than myself on this topic, but I'll do what I can to help.

All you truly need for Blackest Night is the collected trade. As a companion book and for some more great artwork, pick up Green Lantern:Blackest Night. Those two TPB's will be pretty much all you need. All the other stuff is superfluous and not necessary for the full experience. There were some cool moments in those titles, but the aforementioned two are all that's needed to digest the story.

Sinestro Corp is pretty much a self-contained storyline with a few little hints of BN. This is just such a great story in both volumes. It's not really needed for BN or BD, but is an esssential read for any DC fan.

Green Lantern Secret Origin was terrific. Johns has sort of a revisionist role in GL history and canon, but it's a superb book with the best artist DC has going currenty, Ivan Reis. There are a couple of BN seeds planted even back in that book, but it's again a standalone story.

    Here's the recommended TPB order

    Secret Origin
Sinestro Corp volumes one and two
    Green Lantern:Blackest Night
    Blackest Night

You might want to alternate between chapters of the BN books. Read the first chapter of GL and then go over to BN. That might be the best flow to work with.

As for Brightest Day, I don't think anything can get you ready to jump on board with that confusing mess. I was lost and basically bored silly about three weeks in, so go for it if you'd like. I don't see too much coming out of that, so to me it's non-essential.

Brightest Day is only at issue 8 or 9 so it's easy to jump onboard and try to figure out what the heck they're doing...

Yeah, and once you figure out what's going on, please call Dan Didio at DC and explain it to him!

Your really don't have to read any of the other collections to get Blackest Knight other than Blackest Night and GL Blackest Night.

Brightest Day is pretty much the same, even though it was set up by the end of Blackest Night.

I've found Brightest Day to be a pretty frustrating read in serial format. It might or might not stand up better in collected form. I'm leaning toward not.

I'm ready for Aquaman and Martian Manhunter solo series. In fact I'd prefer if DC just moved those two storylines into their own series right now.

Really think DC is muddying the water even more with the Hawkworld stuff in the Hawkman portion of the book. Before long we're going to learn that Thanagar is long-lost fiefdom of Mongo.

Instead of further exploring the Hawkman and Hawkgirl's already convoluted origin(s), why not just try to write an interesting story about the couple and move forward.

I haven't even been paying attention to the Hawkman stuff when it's in the book...I'm just skipping over those pages.....

I don't even care about the ManHunter Stuff.

The Aquaman Stuff is the Best...
With the Deadman Stuff 2nd for me.
I dig the FireStorm Stuff Too.

I could care less for the rest, and probably wouldn't buy the books .

Thanks for the help guys! From everything I've heard and just the little bit I've seen, current comics are a pretty convaluted mess, so any suggestions to wade through it are greatly appreciated.

Like I said, normally I stear clear of modern stuff, but some of the stuff I've seen in Blackest Knight really appeals to my inner geek so I want to check it out.

Yeah, that's what got me interested in Brightest Day too. I love Aquaman and I was at my local comic shop and was flipping through one of the BD issues (can't remember which one) and to see Aquaman in his original Silver Age outfit, no beard, no long hair, no hook, fighting Black Manta, man I got stoked! Took every bit of self control not to buy up every issue of BD just to read the Aquaman stuff. Gotta wait until the trade.

                      Thanks again!

LOL! Sorry, I'm a product of the public education system, what can I say? Believe it or not, I love to read but I'm obviously a horrible speller.

I liked the Wonder Woman and Superman Blackest Night mini series, too. But hardly necessary to the overall story of Blackest Night.
