Looks like it's shaping up to be a good year to be a Legion of Super-Heroes fan. 2008 is the 50th anniversary of the Legion's 1st appearance waaay back in Adventure Comics #247 (Apr. '58) and it looks like DC is biulding up to a few cool events.
First up Geoff Johns and Gary Frank are teaming up on Action Comics #858 (Oct. 31) for the beginning of the "Superman and the Legion of Super-Heroes" story arc, picking up from the LSH's appearance in the JLA/JSA cross-over this year.
Over at the Legion's own book, Supergirl heads back to the 21st Century and the book is retitled "Legion of Super-Heroes" with #37 just in time to see the intro of "new/old" writer Jim Shooter! I'm curious how Shooter will handle these modern versions of concepts he created.
And these 2 Legions are NOT the same versions of each other! Apparently there's an upcoming storyline that's been referenced entitled "The Legion of Three Worlds". I'm hoping it's the Geoff Johns version (which seems to be a direct descendant of the ORIGINAL LSH), the new Shooter version (which is a continuation of the Waid/Kitson reboot) as well as the version that was spun out of Zero Hour's reboot. This way everyone should be happy that "their" favorite version of the LSH exists somewhere/sometime in the DC Multiverse.
As a looong time Legion fan I'm hoping DC pulls out all of the stops and gives us a lot of cool projects (be nice to see Levitz and Giffen tackle a special or something too)...for most of my comic book reading life the LSH was always on the back burner of public awareness and I think it's cool to see them finally getting their due in the spotlight.
I mean a Saturday morning cartoon?! Happy Meal toys?! I never would've thunk it when I was 1st introduced to them back in 5th grade!
LONG LIVE THE LEGION!
