Honestly, since getting involved in buying original comic art...there is a lot of stuff that the color DOESN'T add to the original black and white medium. I can tell you that I love the original EC Hardcover/Slipcase reprints by Cochran. They are so much nicer to read and appreciate than the reprint color annuals they did later on.

Yup I tell you when i went to my first conventions and saw the original art in B&W and saw the lush brush strokes from the old masters it blew me away. I always disliked color and realized how much it takes away. That's why I loved the Warren stuff and some of the Marvel magazines printed in B&W.

I have such a dislike for computer coloring in comics now. Too many artist rely on the color to carry the drawing...........

I used to read Incredible Hulk Magazine way back when and I think-but am not sure-part of it was B&W. I seem to recall Moon Knight stories being in B& W as back-up features. Occasionally I used to read some of the Warren Magazine publications in B&W like Eerie or Creepy. I recall a short story/Star Wars rip-off named Gotterdamerung! in one of hose where fighters from Earth hiding at Jupiter decided to return and force the aliens out.

I picked up Nexus: The Origin in B&W when the original first 2 issues were sold out. Does anyone have the recording that came with them? They hired actors to do the lines and had sound effects put into a soft plastic record included with one of the early books.

I love the black and white stuff

I think it was the Rampaging Hulk was black and white John I recall reading them back in the day.

Then again in the UK most of the comics were black and white so i gues for me it's a return to my youth, I loved the originl run of TMNT and the 2 volumes of black forest

Wish I could afford them to study. i'll have to go through my reprints and find what I want to see in B/W Probably Feldstien,Kriegstien, Woods sci fi, no Ingels please.

Thanks everybody for the list. finding them at the shop is next to impossible. They really don't know where to file them. Now I can go title by title.

Was Mr Monster a B/W? SUper Megaton Man? WonderWarthog?

You'll find Wonder Warthog in most of the comic sized issues of "Rip Off Comix". I can't remember how long he continued into the magazine size.

I *think* the Eclipse Mr Monster were Colour and the Dark Horse were Black and white?
There was a similar divide in b/w and colour between publishers of Megoton Man as well... I want to say that some of the Kitchen Sink were in colour?

Similarly, Zot started off as Colour and also ended up as B/w.

I just noticed the second run of Death Rattle was in colour... I seem to recall the first run was b/w. There was also a Richard Corben series.... Son of Mutant World that had it's first issue in colour and then the rest in b/w.

Yup; and the Image sequel series was B&W too.

Death Rattle ! Ah I remember that one.

What ever happened to the Dead World series? As a kid I can't believe they sold me those with the covers they had.

                  You lose Wertham.

Your Book is out of print and EC is reprinted constantlly !

Dead World still gets a new series every few years. The latest came out from Image and Desperado.

Seduction of the Innocent actually is in print...

I forgot to mention Eddie Campbell's work - which was mainly 90s, I guess.

I read DEAD WORLD when it first came out. I remember buying first-prints of TMNT when it was new, too.

Was a huge fan of CEREBUS until I couldn't afford to follow it anymore in the end of the 80s. Finally got around to reading the last couple of issues just earlier this year, and didn't regret not following it anymore. Blech...

Phil Phoglio's MYTH ADVENTURES comic adaptation was a favorite, as well as A DISTANT STAR - both from Warp. I never did get into ELFQUEST, though...

I was and still am a really big fan of Matt Howarth and his THOSE ANNOYING POST BROS & the other stuff with the Bugtown gang, and his other side-stuff like PARTICLE DREAMS and KONNY & C'ZU.

The original MANGAZINE with stuff like MIGHTY TINY and TIGER-X was a favorite too. And I really loved Tim Eldred's anime-styled titles like BROID, CHASER PLATOON and CYBERSUIT ARKADYNE. Eldred sent me the unpublished conclusion to BROID last year, and I'm eternally in he debt for it!

These were several non-B&W indies I loved back in the 80s, too. MARS and DYNAMO JOE, a series called MECHA that went B & W and then joined an anthology I couldn't keep up with. I picked up Tim Truman's SCOUT and GRIMJACK once in a while, too.

Good times, the 1980s. Everything was a bit of a challenge to keep up with and track down, and were usually new fresh new territory for me as a reader. There's not much these days that I follow (I usually spend my limited comic funds elsewhere), so my comic reader heydays are well behind me.

Cerebus - As weird and distasteful to some of my personal views as that book got, I have to admit, I was fascinated until the very end. It's such an involved and detailed document of a very unusual and creative guy's journey through 30 years - it's totally unique from any other experience I've had with any other body of work.

As a Mignola fan and HB original panel art owner (ok, ok... I'll put that card back in the deck, sorry!), I won't say that color detracts from his art, because it's so carefully chosen, but it is a very different experience. The heavy blacks he does are pretty striking in original ink.

Anyway, am I remembering incorrectly or was the Kitchen Sink Press run of Madman also B&W?

I wasn't really a Cerebus fan, but I have to admit I did send away for a set of the Diamondback cards the creator had printed up on a lark, and there were a few late-night Denny's card games with friends and cousins.

Tick was also B&W early on - and ever since sending away for my Mystic Order of Arachnid Vigilance membership pin and decoder set (I liked sending away for things), I'm still waiting for Ben Edlund to come back from hollywood long enough to send out something I could decode.

A big guilty pleasure of mine was the magazine format Robo Warriors, which I read for the complete run. It had human disguised extra dimensional Kung-Fu (ok, one was technically a Ninja) robots hiding on earth from a giant robot world-eater, and they eventually had to time travel in Kansas and fight their way out through the stomach of a dinosaur. I mean... how can you not love that?

OH! And Longshot Comics. Brilliant. Adventures in extreme minimalism.
