    Charley's War

Anyone else read Charley's War? Brilliant series of classic British World War 1 comics that have been reprinted in high quality hardbacks recently.

Some of the finest War comics ever. Incredible how much story, drama, conflict and character they fit into a mere three pages a week (including the catch-up panels at the beginning of each installment).

You can really see how these influenced Garth Ennis' more recent War comics.

Charly's War was written by Pat Mills, best known for Marshal Law, Slaine and Nemesis the Warlock.

That rings a bell, i think it was printed in Battle Picture Weekly originally. I was a 2000ad reader but seldom bought Battle. Might just have to seek that out

I'm through the second volume now, where they detail the introduction of The Tank during the battle of Sommes, and how it changed the face of warfare when it came to fighting in trenches.

I'm also currently reading the Tankies series of Battlefields comics by Garth Ennis, and it makes a good bookend to see where they evolved to during World War 2.

I'm going to have to dig out War Story Johann's Tiger to reread. It's told from the perspective of the Germans.

Sweet! did not know about Tankies. I'm a World War 2 nut, so that's right up my alley. I did enjoy 'War Story- the Reivers' by Garth Ennis & Cam Kennedy... geez... looking at the comic now... 7 years ago. Time flies!

Make sure you pick up both installments. The second chapter is called Firefly and his Majesty.

Night Witches is another of the Battlefield books worth checking out. It's based on the real life Russian female bomber squad.

Those look great! I don't have any comic tips, but for personal memoirs I can say that 'Storm of Steel' by Ernst Junger is an amazing read. If you're reading about WW1 you can't go past this

Thanks, I'll have to check that out. It's always fascinating to see war through the eyes of "the other side".
