Adams' Green Arrow is one of the better updates....I wonder if there was any reaction back in the day from the fans...Considering the fact that there really was no internet or any other sort of advance press notice of these type of things back then. I'm sure most of it went unnoticed...

Stuff from the Cockrum and Byrne eras were strictly Superhero 101....brightly colored spandex. When Lee and his contemporaries came on board, it became more function over design IMO.

All of a sudden everyone had to have pockets and belts and jackets....Oh all of those freakin' leather jackets! (The worse offenders were the Avengers...Guys like Black Knight and Hercules do not need leather jackets! )

And this sort of mentality of "function" over "design" still permeates today...Case in point one of the reasons for the Wonder Woman costume update is "How does she carry things with no pockets?" W.T.F? WHY, oh WHY do we even worry about where she carries things? Besides her lasso, which is attached to her belt, what does she need to carry anyway? She's not Batman fer crissakes....

        >WHY, oh WHY do we even worry about where she carries things?

I think stuff like this is a weird side-effect of an older, more “knowledgeable” audience. As a person ages, it gets tougher for suspension of disbelief to protect from the oddest things. Older folks have wallets, keys, money.... we get acclimated to that, so we start wondering about things like where the keys for the Invisible jet go; since such things are important to us as oldsters.

        >it became more function over design

Yeah. I think part of THAT is the same effect. And everything HAS to have an explanation, and EVERY blank needs to be filled in.... which is fine. Except when the fans start to obsess. My favourite example being the yellow circle around Batman’s bat. It’s one thing to note that it’s different, but I’ve seen fans lose their minds because it was drawn “wrong.”

If your enjoyment of a book can be disrupted by something THAT minor, it’s time to move on.

        >I wonder if there was any reaction back in the day from the fans

Sometimes I think all the attention given to the minutia is because the older fan is bored with the book and looking for something to engage them. Inertia prevents them from moving on, but they’ve long since lost the visceral kick from the book. So they look for the intellectual; the background facts that can be debated, analyzed, catalogued....

....and even THAT’S fine; but I’ve seen folks go all OCD over it, to the point it no longer seems fun. (Working at the comic shop was kinda scary sometimes.) Sometimes I think that’s the result of the tertiary comic book info industry that popped up back in the 80s; fronted by publications like Amazing Heroes, Wizard, etc.

Ah, the nineties. Hercules shaves, Black Knight doesn't and carries a flashlight.

IMHO, this was the worst Avengers line-up ever. Even Force Works had Iron Man, Scarlet Witch, and USAgent.

          Other 90's excesses...

And is anyone else astonished that Cap-Wolf has yet to show up in this Monster resurgence? I'm kind of expecting him to get together with Vampire Wolverine and FrankenCastle to form some kind of Creature Avengers along the lines of The Monster Squad.
