It's the current version of the "leather jacket" fad of the 90s. Everyone seems to think they have to make everything as realistic as possible. I like a few folds and wrinkles here and there, but it's getting kind of overdone.
Chris
It started with Hitch, but it looks like everyone is trying to capture the look of Motorcycle Leathers.
or ski racing suits
JMS and Gary Frank did it with Supreme Powers as well.
I really don't understand the need to "modernize" the look of these costumes and make them realistic and functional...it is after all STILL a guy wearing a cape and a bat-mask with pointy ears

Actually, isn't this the suit Didio's had planned for months with the wehole "Earth One" idea?
Which in and of itself looked like a far-less-cool version of Wizard's Ultimate DC Batman:
Actually, the idea sounds to me like a way to let whatever artist do whatever take on the costume and keep it all in-continuity -- and form the basis of a whole line of DC Direct Batman figures.
And maybe one of you hipper graphic arts -types can explain to me the current comic artists' obsession with seams in these costume redesigns . . .
Of course we know Morrison's already been mining some pretty interesting stuff from the Batman history.
There are already a dozen Batman related titles, I guess this is a way of giving them some kind of Umbrella with Bruce officially in charge of them all.

I'm surprised that this hasn't been a topic of conversation since they announced it a while back.
It's the new Batman series coming up following the Return of Bruce Wayne.
He's going to be going around the world recruiting a franchised army of Batmen. So it looks like Dick and Damien stay in the role of Batman and Robin in Gotham. This would explain the upcoming Knight and Squire mini as well`.
Although I'm sure the execution of the idea is different, it is funny how this kind of continues the parallels with Captain America. Bruce stepping back and taking a more supervisory role like Steve Rogers did a few months back.
and the yellow oval is back as well.
