"When not too many people can see we're all the same
And because of all their tears,
Their eyes can't hope to see
The beauty that surrounds them
Isn't it a pity".
I recall Kane drew The Micronauts for a while and I still cannot fathom why it looked so bad. Possibly the inker, Danny Bulinadi, was too heavy handed in his inking. I really looked forward to Kane drawing that title and it was a big dissapointment.
I see Kane up there with Steve Ditko, Pat Broderick, Dave Cockrum, Barry Windsor Smith and John & Sal Buscema. Could be that like many other Artists, MARVEL screwed him over when it came time to give him his due.
There are a few old-schoolers who I don’t think get the notoriety they deserve. Kane, Staton, Infantino.... I kind of suspect it might be because they were at their peak during the 60's and 70's; and it wasn’t until the early 80's when you really had a push for “star power” comic artists. Hence guys like Byrne, Miller or Perez getting all the accolades. Even Ditko kinda gets marginalized these days.

I notice this happens with lots of older artists. Maybe they lose the knack from lack of practice? Maybe they stop caring after a certain point? Arthritis? I know alcohol figures into it sometimes.... Yeah, Kane’s Micronauts stuff wasn’t anywhere’s near as good as his earlier stuff. But if you REALLY want to see that sort of thing, check out Ditko’s run on Rom.
Not anymore (ouch!) I agree that it is a shame that Gil Kane doesn't get as much kudos as say Kirby, Ditko, Buscema, Romita and Steranko. But like others have said. Kane is very closely associated with DC, especially through Green Lantern. Neal Adams won't be mention that much by Marvelite's either, but I really loved his short stints on the Avengers and X-men.
Another factor in Kane's lack of Marvel recognition is the fact that Romita inked most of his Spider-Man run, effectively making it look more like his own stuff. He kept it "on model", so other than the layout and body poses, it looks pretty much like Romita.
Besides Green Lantern & The Atom at DC, Kane did a lot of westerns like Johhny Thunder. And don't forget Rex The Wonder Dog...you may laugh at Rex, but sometime take a look at the going price of back issues on Ebay (if & when they appear, which is few & far between!)
His work at Marvel on covers was exceptional, especially on the oddball stuff like Rawhide Kid. There's a cover of the Kid drinking from a watering hole with guns pointed at him, I seem to remember Kane saying in an interview it was his favorite cover. He also got to do the few special issues of Spider-Man, the drug issues, 1st Morbius, and of course, Death of Gwen Stacy.
I met Gil at Pittsburgh Con in the mid -80s, one of his last appearances. he was pretty weak and was signing only, no drawing anymore. He did sign a GL book for me and drew a little GL mask under it which was really cool. Very nice guy, very professional in a suit & tie.
Oh, and he did a couple of the very first graphic novels in the late sixties: His Name is Savage (a detective book) and BlackMark (a sword/sorcery book), which is worth seeking out, either in the original 60s paperback book or the Marvel reprint magazine from the 80s.
I met Gil when I was Ken Landgrafs assistant in the early 90's man was amazing could draw anything from his mind a true master. Gil did so many great covers for Marvel but because he didn't create any of the iconic heroes he's looked over which he shouldn't.
I used to stumble over Landgraf's ebay auctions every now and then years back, and they always seemed to have a certain desperation to them (I'm not sure if that was just his sense of humour). Hope he's doing okay.

Ken's work kinda got worse over the years but he's a great guy. He showed me a lot of secrets of the the Comic Biz and helped me with my inking with brush. I haven't seen him in years.
Absolutely love Kane's stuff, from any era of any company. There is something about his linework that is so clean & dynamic, wonderfully expressive faces, he drew both men & women beautifully.
Just re-read his Adam Warlock run--great stuff, which in fact I prefer to Starlin.
