Superman Movie Re-Boot: What would thrill you?

Looking at this great custom over in the custom forum, I was treally struck by the box (great job, BTW!) and just flooded with the feelings I had back in 1978 when the Reeve movie was coming out -- the excitement and anticipation, and how that chrome 'S' and the chrome-and-glass logo just thrilled me, drawing me with the promise of the (then) modern update to the character.

So my question is: What would the studios have to do to create the same excitement for a new Superman? I wanted to love Superman Returns, but even before it came out, there was so much that bugged me, (except of course fo the spectacualr plane rescue ) and after taking my son to see it, fiund it just didn't click.

I know what I'd like to see in a new Superman movie (heck, I wrote it to make a point to someone!) but I'm curious what what other fans would want, what could create again that excitement back from 1978.

    What say you?

I would like Superman to face an intergalactic threat that physically taxes him to the limit. Whether it's Brainiac, or Darkseid, or a bruiser like Doomsday, something that's out of this world. No iteration of Superman on film has really tackled the cosmic scope of the Superman series, outside of Krypton and the Phantom Zoners.

A couple of other things I'd like to see:

-No origin. We all know it. Donner did a great job with it. Don't go there.

-No or little Lex. Lex can be behind the scenes, but not the main foe. I'd rather just leave him out of it all together.

-The Superman/Lois romance should be there, but not be the main thrust of the piece.

-No muted maroons. Give him red and blue man!

Well, as usual Chris...you and I think alike, so I have nothing to add...you said it ALL!

Except of course, Tom Welling should play SUPERMAN!

I agree wholeheartedly!!! Even if you make the movie based on the animated version of "Doomsday". I think you'll have a "Major hit" on your hands. Oh' and Keep the Reeves' costume......it'll be sacrilegious to alter it. If he can fight in the animated versions, why not in the "live version".

Inject more of the essence of the comic books into the next Superman movie, to whatever degree.

An epic cosmic threat for Superman to face, for instance.

I'd want to see a tall, muscular Superman than can act.

I want a complete reboot. Forget Donner.
(No matter how much I love Donner's Superman.)

I want a story that reminds me of why I feel in love with Superman to begin with. I want a fun movie. I'm done with downers. The reason Donner's flick worked so well wasn't that he made us believe a man could fly... he gave us a man we WANTED to believe could fly. Batman Begins and Dark Knight works for Batman. This IS NOT Batman.

In a perfect world, I would sit in a theater and watch an adaptation of Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow starring an unknown.

I say no Lex unit he stops being and evil crime lord business man and starts being a mad scientist bent on world domination while weaing a purple shirt with green pants.

While more assocaited with the JSA today Ultra Humanite began as a superman villian and could be so again (allowing for multi film arcs since his stocik & trade is body snatching)

Parasite could be a very good villian for film since he can believable duke it out with Superman

                My first choice is braniac

I'd love to see Brainiac. Darkseid comes with too much baggage IMO for a big budget flick if you touch on New Genesis, Apokolips, New Gods etc. Maybe if you build up to it for a future flick but not right off the bat with a new reboot. That is, if you try and stay true to the comic book roots. Same with Doomsday...The Death of Superman may not be a good place to start a new series.

A couple of other things I'd like to see:

-No origin. We all know it. Donner did a great job with it. Don't go there.
Agreed, we all know the story by now. If they do feel the need to touch upon Krypton, please something other than the "crystal community" that's been pushed ad nauseum.

-No or little Lex. Lex can be behind the scenes, but not the main foe. I'd rather just leave him out of it all together.
Again agreed....if you use a heavy-hitter like Brainiac shrinking cities and whatnot, Luthor isn't needed. Maybe a cameo of him in prison frustrated that someone else is stealing his thunder but that's about it.

-The Superman/Lois romance should be there, but not be the main thrust of the piece.
The romance needs to be built up to....not right off the bat....And hopefully Clark/Supes won't be as stupid as he was in "Superman II" this time around.

-No muted maroons. Give him red and blue man!
Design-wise I'd like to see them take a cue from Warren Beatty's colorful costumes for Dick Tracy. Red, blue and yellow for Supes and nice green and purple for Brainy.
Think OUTSIDE the Box! For the BEST in Repro & Custom Packaging!

Taking a cue from two comics titles that more often than not have featured the Man of Steel or at least the Boy of Steel.

ACTION and ADVENTURE and a whole lot of it.

I would go with Brianiac as the villain and maybe after he and his army of robots get their cans kicked, he unleashes Doomsday at the end of the flick to set up the next film.

I would save Darkseid for a JLA film.

The good news is Geoff Johns is involved in the DC movies now. He's had the best handle on Superman in YEARS. Well outside of Morrison's All-Star run. He was great on that.
