Maybe in Kyle's case, which makes him heroic for rising to the challenge, but the rest are chosen by the rings for their ability to overcome fear aren't they?
Maybe the take is that Hal doesn't REALIZE (at first) that he is so ultimately
fearless...until he's pushed into the situation by the Oa Guardian dudes.

Don't really care what the poster says if they get it right on the film. Besides Johns has retconned it into being about conquering fear, which goes into the will power thing.
I remember reading somewhere as a kid that GLs were supposed to be brave, honest and fearless, but I checked out Showcase 22 in the GL Archives and all it mentioned was fearless.
The rings also protected their bearer from harm, according to an early JLA issue, maybe No. 2, but of course that didn't sync up with Abin Sur and the origin story.
I'm hoping the film depicts how Sur is mortally wounded.
++++++++++POSSIBLE SPOILER+++++++++++++++++++
I read that the screen play actually opens with Hal already as GL and then flashes back to the origin. Don't know if that's true or if it will stick.
It would be a good way to get the GL stuff up and going early in the film, but would have to be deftly handled to not be confusing.
Or maybe it implies that there *could* be a hero in all of us.
Most certainly.
