Is this a slight retcon of Captain Atom's Origin?

It seems a bit different than DC's Captain Atom #1 in the eighties, but I don't have the issue on hand to compare.

Have they ever explored the alien origins of Captain Atom's "skin"?

A broken clock is right twice a day. With Winick doing so well with JL:GL and the Red Hood DVD, I have to wonder if he'll revert now.

That's pretty much what I remember from the 80s run. They worked in the versions from previous incarnations of the character by having them be the US Army's propaganda/PR versions of the character released to the public.

I don't think they ever got into the origin of the Alien ship, though.

EDIT: though in the 80s run, the trial was in 1968 and he jumped forward to the present day by absorbing so much radiation. Then the US gov't chose not to honor the pardon, feeling that they were under no obligation to honor the word of a previous administration. And he found his wife had married General Eiling, yes, eventual Shaggy Man General Eiling who fought the Justice League, who had been instrumental in his conviction or arrest or something, and his children were adults who hated him. He really got shafted.

I don't have any idea if the idea of his kids or anything else of that origin survives today.

Thanks Spamn, I wasn't sure if he was a pilot in the alien ship or not in the original DC version. I seemed to recall him just being a prisoner encased in a shell or an egg of the metal.

Slight spoiler... looks like they figured out a way to get Power Girl into the book after all!

Yeah, I think the army made the egg out of the ship's metal and sealed him in it, rather than blowing up the ship.

Something nobody seems to remember nowadays either is that he can somehow get the metal to go under his skin and look like a normal guy, though he's prematurely white-haired. In the JLU cartoon they made him a being of pure energy encased in some kind of metal suit, which annoyed me.

Why would they be looking to get Power Girl into the book? Were they an item or something?

She was one of the main players during the Giffen era in JLE, and they managed to sneak her into one of the previous Giffen era revivals.

Since she's running around in two JSA titles and her own solo book, I just assumed she was off limits for this series. Nice to see her in a cameo.

I've always been curious about Cooke's take on Nate Adam in The New Frontier.

Nate Adam flies into the breech with Hal Jordan and Ace Morgan.

No mention of him after the act in that book, but this is the quote from the story:

"When it came down to it, Captain Nathaniel Adam paid the full price of a hero's death. And he paid it like a man."
