    Superman 701

Okay, I picked this up today. I wanted to give this a shot since Superman is back on Earth, but has chosen to walk across it for some strange reason. This is the JMS debut, so I'll give it a try.

    I liked it.

This kind of issue reminds us of what a good person Superman is. He can spilt the moon in half with a punch, but it's his heart that makes him who he is. He helps everyday people with their daily drama and crises. He listens to their problems, helps them solve them or inspires them to solve their own. There was no real action here, but none was needed. This was a story about the Man and not the Super. Great characterization tale. I'll keep with this for a while.

Yeah I'm on board so far too...I'm assuming this while be a 12-issue run that mirrors what he's doing over on Wonder Woman. Anything longer than 12-issues of Supes walking around getting cats outta trees is going to be a bit boring.

      meh.

I'll be borrowing this or picking up the trade at the library if I read the rest of it at all. Good heart or not, it's boring stuff and the setup in 700 was just silly.

I've heard that, while the story takes place in Philadelphia the artist didn't do his homework about the city. That doesn't mean much to those that aren't from or in Phili, but I thougth it an interesting point.
      Hey! Check out the pictures.

I liked 701, but I'm still skeptical that it will work over a 12-issue arc. JMS better have some solid ideas up his sleeve or his run could get repetitive and boring pretty fast.

The one thing in the book that I did not buy is that the media would back off when they found out Superman would just be walking. I've worked in journalism for 20 years and if there was a Superman who was just strolling across the country, every so-called news entity from CNN to TMZ would have a crew walking right behind him.

There was a lot of other schmaltz or corn in the book, too, but hey my favorite director is Frank Capra. I'm probably in for the long haul. Haven't missed an issue since 1975.

But DC really needs have an action-packed Superman story simmering on the back burner because Superman's always been a character of action.

"He started out as a champion of the everyman, and we want to get him back to that," Straczynski said of Superman. "The next issue will see him spend most of the issue looking for the bathroom, and the issue after that looking for a place to make change for $100 after ten o'clock," he joked.

After Straczynski repeated the idea that Superman would be facing problems he couldn't solve by punching people, Sattler joked, "If that doesn't work, can we have an arc where he just goes around punching people?"

Although Chloe from Smallville will be showing up there.
Nick Spencer will be writing a Jimmy Olsen co-feature in "Action Comics," and wore a bow tie to commemorate the occasion. "Jimmy Olsen's always been one of my favorite characters," Spencer said. His story will be about "what it's like to be a normal guy in the DCU." Olsen is "determined to live life to its fullest, and that puts him into some crazy situations." Chloe from "Smallville" will appear in the backup feature as an ongoing character.
