Hmmmm....
I think Rocket Raccoon was when I realized how much the "mainstream" comics borrowed from the independants of the day. "Say; Ninja Turtles are popular, so's this Albedo book and that Usagi whasits...."
So.... who came first, Rocket or Ch'p?

Rocket Raccoon was created a decade prior to Turtle or Usagi in 1976. Probably more to do with the success of Howard the Duck at the time. Ch'p debuted in 82.
Although you do have a point given the fact that his mini does coincide with success of the Turtles book in 84-85. (I think Usagi didn't appear until two years later).
He's changed quite a bit from the early days though.

Marvel's guilty of it as well. Here was their attempt to cash in on the Turtles.
