Does Lyrl Dox have any previous appearances? Has Brainiac 4 ever shown up anywhere (I would guess in Legion history somewhere relating to Brainiac 5's origins?)

Is it worth checking out? I was always luke-warm on the original post Invasion L.E.G.I.O.N.

Is he new or is there a Pre-Crisis (or L.E.G.I.O.N.) incarnation?

I'm mostly interested in jumping in this one to follow the story of Geoff Johns' rebooted Brainiac.

And Brainiac 4 is not noteworthy save for the fact that he is the father of Brainiac 5.

Brainiac and Brainiac 3 tarnished the name, and it fell out of use in Coluan culture for almost a thousand years, before Brainiac 4 reclaimed the name.

his only real contribution was reclaiming the name in time to name his son. Who is also awesome.

but Querl, Lyrl, and Vril are the cool ones.
