why the movie doesn't thrill me

    So....

I was reading that they’ve been pushing for a Grimjack movie or tv show for a while; and I really wasn’t excited about it. Weird, considering Grimjack is one of my all time favourite books. But for me, the idea behind something is a lot more important than the execution; and for a comic like Grimjack, that idea was fulfilled by the comic itself. A movie COULDN’T add anything to the story. If anything it’d detract from it, ‘cos there’d be a tendency to remove some of the more unique features.... and Grimjack is based AROUND the unique features. (“Justin Bieber IS John Gaunt....”)

And there’s a lot of stuff like that; stuff that’s fine where it is. ‘Course there’s some stuff that’d be cool as a film: mostly ‘cos the book didn’t do justice to the story. I’d love a “Mister X” movie. Or “Midnight Tales.” Maybe.... MAYBE a “Post Bros” film.

....but not Grimjack. He’s fine as-is.

I think they're overdue for a Dynamo Joe film.

I can't see Grimjack being a satisfactory live-action movie experience either. Even with contemporary CG, I can't see Cynosure translating in any satisfactory manner to the big screen.

I'd add Judge Dredd to that list. I really can't see a major mainstream release doing justice to the dark-satirical undercurrent that typifies the best Dredd stories, Stallone or not.

Man, that is a blast from the past!

He was practically the Poster Child for the Ani-merican movement wasn't he?

          Hmmmm....

Yeah; Dredd is tough to translate to film.... not 'cos of the look; the last film had the look down pretty good (well, except for the Judges and their armoured codpieces) but there's no way anyone would make a comic-accurate story. Dredd is a very UNlikable character.... that's kind of the point. (No romantic hankey-pankey either.) And that's the kicker: there's too much money involved in a big film for them to take risks, even if it's the risky stuff that made the comic so popular. (Like how they HAD to make Dredd remove his helmet in the film, even though he NEVER does that in the book.) Grimjack would be worse; given how utterly bleak the book can get. (AND Gaunt's old and ugly: two things you almost never see on screen.) At one time they were gonna make an American Flagg movie. I can only imagine how THAT would have gone.... ("Justin Bieber IS Reuben Flagg!")

And as I recall, there was talk of a Dynamo Joe cartoon series, but it fell through. THAT'S one I'd like to see; especially if they continued from where the comic ended.
