Should Suicide Girls be allowed at Comic Conventions?
Tags: None -
I actually know a "Suicide Girl" she's my friends sister. We saw them wandering around Fan Expo in Toronto the last few years. I don't mind them. -
Comic Cons are that last refuge in this main stream society where freaks, geeks, nerds, and individuals who feel like outcasts because of their hobbies or interests can feel at home and feel like they are not alone.
(of course everyone can be roped into one of those categories, and I do not mean them in a demeaning or insulting manner. I consider myself one or the other and sometimes all.)
Until now, comic cons have policed their own. Obviously if there are kids around, keep things G-PG. Keep adult books high on a shelf, cover naughty bits on the cover with a piece of paper, etc. And everyone got along pretty OK.
If a dealer or exhibitor was banned, it was for a reason with more substance than they looked weird or sold weird things. If you banned everyone who did so, you'd end up with a convention where the only booths were Archie and Disney Comics.
Suicide Girls are not that different. Sure, *I* don't get the appeal. But many do. Let them show. Give them the same rules as everyone else (inappropriate material out of the hands of kids), and let them be themselves.
When San Diego started heading in the mainstream direction, away from the haven of dorks and more towards the mecca of the media, I defended it saying, well there is no such thing as bad press. I figure the more folks knew, the easier it would be to be accepted as the norm. Heck, you can walk into a bookstore and buy a comic book along side a copy of Moby Dick, and no one bats an eye.
But maybe it's gone too far? It's become something else. And it's sad.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

What the hell is a Suicide Girl? I've seen references to them, but don't know what they are.Comment

I think that an outright ban of these girls might be a little extreme but some expectations of appropriate behaviour/dress might be a good idea.
However, a spectacle like the Bottomless Backless Kilt Scottish Sucide Girl is just wrong, on many, many levels.90, Joe 90.... Great Shakes : Milk Chocolate -- Shaken, not Stirred.Comment

As long as they follow certain rules they should not be banned. The "backless bottomless kilt" should not be allowed due to kids being present but them just being there shouldn't be an issue.Comment
